Louisville Tournament: March 2012

Classic 510 point kill-em-all (C3V inclusive), Rolling Rumble

I played
280 Aubrien Archers x4
120 Venoc Warlord
100 Haduc
010 Isamu

My goal, obviously, was to have fun. I mean, 14+ to Frenzy has to be hilariously awesome, right? Right.

Game 1 vs MegaSilver on Capuan Arena
240 Venoc Vipers x4
140 Eltahale
120 Venoc Warlord
(no Isamu)

I let him pick the map, so he went for something where he could get to me quickly. Great. Eltahale lead the charge for him, but luckily rolled only 1 skull. Aubriens knocked out Vipers quickly of course. Even though I lost a few Archers (5 total), Eltahale's luck didn't get any better and Archers were able to kill Vipers a lot quicker than the later could kill the former. In the end, though, it was the Frenzy disparity that won me the day. 5 Frenzies to 0. (500 kill points, 80 lost)

Win, 1-0

Game 2 vs El Diabolo on Toxic
240 Gladiatrons x3
180 Blastatrons x3 (drop 1)
080 Raelin RotV

Really? I bring the "fun" army and this is what I'm up against?! He actually declined to move the Blasts at first, trying to get a good lead with the Glads and moving the Blasts out only after things were secured. However, my Aubriens kept their distance and mowed down a good two squads of Glads before even getting engaged. And even then my dice were hotter. Good attack rolls for me and poor defense for him meant we were a few rounds in before I lost even a single Archer. Ultimately he brought down 3 squads, but I still came out on top. (500 kill points*, 210 lost)

Win, 2-0

*Pretty sure everyone was just trying to handicap me by not running full points

Game 3 vs Holden on Valley of Shadows
150 Roman Legionnaires x3
110 Airborne Elite
100 Marcus Decimus Gallus
090 Ne-Gok-Sa
050 Me-Burq-Sa

Holden chose this map for the shadow bonuses for defense over the road movement of Highways & Dieways. I think that actually helped me. His AE Dropped right at the start, and with long, skinny starting zones I could've been in big trouble. But then I won Initiative. And Frenzied. And Frenzied. And Frenzied. Four turns in a row! I killed 3 Airborne and got a wound or two on his heroes. His last AE tried for a Grenade, but didn't do anything before dying. Still, the Romans and their heroes proved to be quite tough. I lost most of my Aubriens, and Haduc to MBS who had bounded over one of the hills. I finally brought MBS down and then NGS, too, before he could Mindshackle anything (but not before losing Mittens to wounds anyway). This was my closest game all day, despite SIXTEEN Frenzies!!! 2 Aubriens and Isamu were all I had left. (500 kill points*, 430 lost)

Win, 3-0

*see??

Game 4 vs Sawyer on Receded Waters
120 Kurrok
105 Earth Elemental x3
105 Fire Elemental x3
090 Air Elemental x3
090 Water Elemental x3

Another "fun" army, yea! Sawyer chose this map, which was the biggest and also the toughest on Line of Sight. That hurt my Aubriens a lot, but also wasn't kind to Kurrok. He had to stick pretty close to his start zone, and as an aggressive player I was more than happy to work my way toward him. By the time I had killed two of each Elemental, the lead half of my Aubriens were also gone. I was worried that Kurrok would be left enough time to Summon back some of his army, but he only got 1 of 4 rolls. Then the rest of my Archers rolled in and finished the job. (510 points killed, 210 lost)

Win, 4-0

Game 5 vs enkidu on Hot Heights (?)
260 Mezzodemon Warmongers x4
240 Marro Stingers x4
010 Isamu

Four squads of Mezzos and not a special attack to my army? Great! Leading with the Aubriens was the only thing I could do, so enkidu brought up the Mezzos. Thanks to Frenzy, I was able to knock their Exoskeletons off pretty quickly and even kill a few (3), but not without losing some Archers in return. He switched over to Stingers, killing off the rest of my Archers, while I only thinned them out a little bit. So at this point, facing roughly 2 squads of each, I had to switch to Haduc. Winning Initiative a lot and grabbing the Scarab of Invulnerability and Heroic Attack Treasures as well as stopping at the glyph of Kelda helped Haduc actually go the distance! He ended with 4 wounds. During the Archer/Stinger/Haduc fight, enkidu was 1 hit 1 critical miss on Drain. (510 kill points, 280 loss)

Win, 5-0

Game 6 vs Major Q23 on Highways & Dieways
210 Axegrinders x3
180 Black Wyrmling x6
120 Mogrimm Forgehammer

He didn't have a lot of Dwarves, but the road meant even while bonding they could engage my Archers rather easily. In fact I lost about 2 squads while only killing 2 Dwarves, until Frenzy kicked in a few times in a row and evened the odds. Still, I wasn't looking forward to the Black Wyrmlings since they could ignore both Isamu and Haduc's defensive powers. Luckily, they missed a little more than half their rolls, but the did get a few solid 2-wound hits on my heroes. This was a fairly close game, with a ridiculously long endgame. The last Wyrm blocked two full rounds of attacks from Isamu, while my little ninja similarly Vanished from all Dwarf attacks. The last squad of Dwarves finally got through, though, to deal me my first defeat. (440 kill points, 510 lost)

Loss, 5-1

Game 7 vs David on Can't See the Jungle
280 Axegrinders x4
120 Mogrimm Forgehammer
110 Migol Ironwill

Crap. More Dwarves. I set my heroes on the island in the middle so at least he'd be at height disadvantage while attacking them. And he did, trying to plow through my bonuses to Frenzy. Mittens held up for a long time, though, allowing my Archers, shooting from a distance, to really lower the number of enemies on the map. Eventually Mittens died and I think Haduc took one or two wounds, but I didn't lose a single Archer (they defended all attacks against them). (510 kill points, 120 lost)

Win, 6-1, 1st place

(And it didn't matter, but my point differential was +1,620. Also, in total, I had right about 50 Frenzies! Fun!)

When I tested that army, I got a hilarious number of frenzies, and beat a 10th army in 2 rounds. It is a fun army, for sure. And Haduc can be a beast in cleanup if you get initiative.

Congrats on the win!

I'd say NB's D-20 was overpowered

Actually it was virtually pointless to have both Mittens and Haduc. I rolled a 14 I think 4 times, two were in the same game, and one was after Haduc had been slaughtered by the Marro in game 3 so I didn't get that Frenzy. Still lots of fun, thought!

Omegacron, Zaeus, and Zogross have all showed up at our tournaments as well, but Haduc is by far the most used C3V figure so far.
