Final Results - January 2011 Lazy Laundry Tournament
Posted February 1st, 2011 at 11:23 AM by Elginb
Well, the final four rounds were pretty entertaining, and the final results just as surprising as those of the previous Lazy Laundry Tournament. I really LOVE the impact of these new D&D figures on the game.
Round 3 didn’t have any particularly close or interesting games. A couple upsets, but not much to go into (the Silver Surfer lost to a bunch of Omnicron Snipers trumped up on an Attack +1 glyph; and the Red Skull’s unlimited range as master planner beat out Kurrock’s mere 8 space range for his mastery of the elements). But there was some drama in the Quarterfinals.
AnubiansX3, Khosumet, MezzodemonsX4, Guilty *
Sgt. Drake 2.0, SentinelsX2, 4th MassX3
The Sentinels headed out first to act as blockers, and the Anubians ran out to try and eat ‘em up. They managed to take out most of the Kyrie, but the 4th Mass were advancing up to the top of the high castle walls in the middle of the map, and they started destroying the wolves. The thing about Mezzodemons, however, is that if you don’t have a special attack, there’s no way to stop them from advancing on you and taking the high ground away from you. Soon, a couple of the big buggers were all alone on top and started eviscerating the 4th Mass. Still, the 4th Mass got their shots in, wearing away at the demons’ exoskeletons. With the demise of the 4th Mass eminent, Sgt. Drake grappled his way up to the high ground and knocked the last couple exoskeleton markers off of the Mezzodemons and cleared the wall walk, but not without taking severe damage in the process. At this point it was just Drake with only one life left versus 7 Mezzodemons, Guilty McCreech, and Khosumet. However, Drake was the only one on the high ground and, as good as the Mezzodemons are against squads, they really suck against a tough hero like Drake. They simply couldn’t advance on him quickly enough to do anything before he shot them. Finally, Drake had to come down from the high ground to get close enough to attack Khosumet and Guilty. Guilty was killed with one shot, but Khosumet ran up to Drake who was hanging just above on a ledge. The Dark Lord’s single attack missed and Drake chopped off his head immediately afterward.
Hulk, VenocsX3, Blue Wyrm, Black Wyrm, Red Wyrm *
Red Skull, MotH, Hydra, Pulverizer, Kelda, Shiori
The Venocs were sent out as a first strike force, as they had been in previous match-ups, but this time they were no match for the Hydra and Pulverizer, both of which blocked any attempts to target the Red Skull. Seeing the failed strategy, the Hulk leapt out to try to salvage things. His first attack was a limp tap on the Hydra’s shoulder, so the mythical beast lashed out and issued 5 wounds to the Hulk. But the madder Hulk gets, the stronger Hulk gets! With one punch, he eliminated the Hydra. The Pulverizer advanced and, on his first attack, successfully got another wound on the Hulk; then, on his second attack, the Ogre managed to knock himself out (it was kind of funny). It took two turns for the Hulk to knock out Kelda, and in the mean-time the Red Skull had given the Hulk another wound, but then the Hulk wiped that red, toothy smile off the Skull’s face with one punch. Shiori was shaking in her boots, but somehow she managed to run away while tossing a shuriken right between the Hulk’s green eyes. The two remaining Venocs made an effort to take out the novice ninja, but she made Venoc sandwiches out of them and advanced on the high ground. Shiori was still fully healthy as the Wyrmlings flew to the high ground. There, she took out the Black Wyrmling, but not before it placed 2 wounds on her. The next turn, she was taken out the one-two Red-Blue punch.
Sgt. Drake 2.0, SentinelsX2, 4th MassX3 *
Hulk, VenocsX3, Blue Wyrm, Black Wyrm, Red Wyrm
Another classic! The Sentinels advanced first to create a protective wall for the 4th Mass, and the Venocs swooped in on them with mixed results. Causing some damage, but unable to break through their wall, the Venocs gave way to the Wyrmling blitz—the Black and Red Wyrmlings started taking out the Kyries left and right while the Blue Wyrmling made valiant attempts to down the blue-coats. The 4th Mass, however, was methodically taking out the Venocs and getting good shots at the baby dragons, so the Hulk decided to jump in. He landed smack in the middle of four 4th Mass figures, and they managed to put 4 wounds on the Green Gargoyle (Stan Lee’s term), but then the Hulk stomped them into a fine powder. Learning from their mistake, the remaining 4th Mass spread out to avoid any stomping… but not enough to avoid the Wyrmling assault! The Blue and Red Wyrmlings swooped down and eliminated all but a wounded Sgt. Drake, one 4th Mass-man, and two Sentinels; however, the Hulk had only one life left himself. Still, the Hulk held out, punching out Drake and one Sentinel, while the Wyrmlings took out the rest.
Hulk, VenocsX3, Blue Wyrm, Black Wyrm, Red Wyrm *
Warhulk, Mind Flayer, Pulverizer, DeathchasersX4, White Wyrm
As is often the case, the final match in the tournament was a bit of a let-down. Clearly the Hulk’s team had honed their skills in a much tougher half of the draw as they very easily downed the Deathchaser team. The Venocs pretty much took out all of the Deathchasers and their Warhulk buddy all on their own, frenzying 3 or 4 times in the game. At one point the PeaceHulk gave the Mind Flayer a sporting chance at enslaving him into a lava pool, but it wasn’t to be and soon the Green Goliath was the victor!
I’m a huge fan of the Hulk but he’s never won more than a couple rounds before, let alone been in contention for the title. The Venoc Vipers are a bit flashier, but I’ve teamed them with the Hulk before without such great results. Instead, I have to give credit to the Wyrmlings—they can really fill in the gaps in any army, and did so very efficiently on the Hulk’s team. Considering that there were two other teams with Wyrmlings in the Final Four, I’d have to give the Wyrmlings the MVP award, even though the Master of the Hunt had a great tournament, too. Anyway, since integrating D&D units into the game, I’ve seen the Anubian Wolves and the Hulk become contenders—I honestly never thought I’d see the day; so once again I give a big salute to the D&D waves!
