TGRF's Fan Fiction Chronicles - Entry 21

TLFF (The Last Fan Fiction) has been struggling to resolve itself into a tangible form for awhile. I believe it's getting close, but in the event that everything changes, I won't be saying what direction it's taking until I'm sure.

While I proofread/edit HiS, I've been trying to define the theme/setting of TLFF, and I've recently had to face a fact I've known for awhile:

Your writing is at its best when it is your writing. That is, invented by you, and not relying on or using something someone else made. I've seen this quite a bit in my own fan fiction: the parts which have the least to do with Valhalla and the most to do with my own story are the best, while the parts which rely most on Valhalla and its story are the weakest. I'm not as interested in those parts as I am in the others, and I believe it comes across in my writing. It's for this reason that my origin stories (Final Battleground, Dilmir, and Ragnak) never made it to Valhalla, even though they all originally started out with that planned.

Don't worry; this doesn't mean I'm scrapping the idea of fan fiction. What it does mean is that TLFF is looking like it won't be sticking to Valhalla's story line too closely. Again, anything is capable of change, but at the moment, only the bare basics are there (Valkyrie, wellsprings, Valhalla, war).

Aside from not following the traditional story of 'Scape, I'm also trying to avoid adding too many game-changing story elements into Valhalla. So far I've been successful, but I feel like TLFF is nearing the point where I might have to let it just invent its own world and hope Valhalla fits. At the moment nothing destructive is being considered.

That being said, a lot of history and backstory of 'Scape we know is likely not going to be there. That doesn't mean I'm going to start deleting well-known characters right and left. It likely just means certain events - like Thormun discovering the first wellspring for instance - will not happen, or will happen out of order. At the moment I'm fairly certain someone else will be discovering a different wellspring first. Again, I could be wrong.

So as far as TLFF is concerned... just be prepared for a fresh Valhalla. It will still be Valhalla, with the Valkyrie you know, the wellsprings, and the armies doing battle, but the history may be different, and some things about Valhalla might be changed.

----

Those of you who read The River That is Red and who are familiar with the finer points of Valhalla's backstory might find it a bit odd (given the above) that the (admittedly self-proclaimed) best fan fiction I've written is also the one which sticks closest to the lore of 'Scape.

I blame that on Red's theme. By all rights the whole front half of the fan fiction should have been full of weak writing. I think the theme overcame the constricted story, proving again that if you really believe in your theme your writing will show it.
