Feb. 2011 Louisville Tournament Report

Posted February 5th, 2011 at 08:34 PM by NecroBlade
Today marked the first of our monthly tournaments for this year. Here's what I played, who I played, and the results!

Format: 5-round swiss, 510 points, partial scoring.

My army-
220 Death Chasers of Thesk x4
110 Airborne Elite
080 Raelin (RotV)*
050 Me-Burq-Sa
050 Nerak

*I have now played each A+ unit once competitively.

Games and results.

Game 1 vs jschild on Burial Marsh
170 Moltenclaw
150 Gobin Cutters x3
150 Horned-Skull Brutes x2
035 Earth Elemental

Because of the start zones, my first-round AE Drop let me get off a good Grenade volley despite losing Initiative. Grenades were , , , and . That is hands-down my best round of Grenades ever. Brutes were a pretty even match for Chasers, but I had better numbers. Moltenclaw got off one great attack (that is one difficult special to avoid) before getting shot down.
Result: Win, 1-0

Game 2 vs Sean on Flooded Temple II
120 Tagawa Samurai
110 Ninjas of the Northern Wind
100 Kozuke Samurai
100 Krav Maga Agents
080 Raelin (RotV)

AE Dropped first round again, taking top spots on the castle. However, despite my Raelin moving forward, the Krav were able to kill all but one with ease. That last AE took out one Krav before dying. My speedy bonded heroes took both glyphs, getting my army +1A/+1D. With those and other bonuses and height, my Chasers were consistently 6A/6D. I overextended a little and had to wait for reinforcements, but between that and an epic Counter Strike roll (4 extra shields!) my Chasers still managed to come out on top.

Result: Win, 2-0

Game 3 vs Oden on Tight Quarters
300 Marro Stingers x5
160 Marro Hive
050 Me-Burq-Sa

This small map was very good for the Hive. My AE dropped round 1 again and shot it up but weren't able to finish it. Stingers advanced and started rebirthing, so I knew I had to kill the Hive or I'd be in trouble. Between a missed passing swipe on Me-Burq-Sa and an Initiative switch, he and a couple Chasers took it down. Time was called and my last attack roll of the game finally killed his last Stinger.

Result: Win, 3-0

Game 4 vs Jonathan (?) on Fulcrum
150 10th Regiment x2
150 Major Q10
110 Airborne Elite
080 Raelin (RotV)
020 Marcu Esenwein

This was the third game in a row with at least one mirrored unit. Neither of our AE Dropped first round. His eventually beat mine onto the field, taking both hills (luckily mine didn't Drop until NEXT round, when I had cleared the hills again). It took FOREVER to pierce Q10's armor, even after Realin fell. I had all my defense bonuses stacked in the middle of the field, though (including height and jungle), so it was an uphill battle for Jonathan.

Result: Win, 4-0

Game 5 vs Ben on Tight Quarters
240 Warforged Soldiers x3
120 Siege
090 Heirloom
060 Zetacron

I liked the theme of his army. Once again, AE Dropped round 1. I tried my luck at the Grenades, he having clumped probably to bait me into it. I didn't get a single two-skull Grenade, though, nor score a single wound. The rest of the match was move up melee squad, kill opponents, for both sides. Until finally it came down to a full-health Siege against a handful of Chasers and my own wounded heroes. Siege was up to 3 wounds by the time he killed them all and I was left with a lone AE (who had been holding the Move +2 glyph this whole time). I tried to kite him, but Seige is a tank and I lost a very close match.

Result: Loss, 4-1

Ben was the second-place finisher. Most of his games went to time, so he was unable to get full points from his opponents.

I had a blast and was glad to see a lot of new players in our field of 12!

My new tournament record:
32-17 (65.3%)
