Final D3 Preview: National Heroscape Day
I just got home from the New England NHSD event. Across the country today players sat down across the table to roll some dice together. If your local NHSD event was anything like mine, you came away with a bunch of fun stories, and hopefully a few new rivals!
I'm excited to announce that WotC gave us permission to release the preview set of D3 to some lucky participants on National Heroscape Day. So a few lucky players in New England, Texas, and Iowa walked away from the events with some very exclusive prizes!
At each of those 3 events today we revealed one final figure, and for those of you not attending, here they are!
Moltenclaw:
Moltenclaw might look like just a short range Mimring at first. However, once you play on a battlefield with him, you'll realize he completely changes the way your opponent thinks about placement!
Ice Troll Berserker:
The Ice Troll is a quick, low cost hero for the Arrow Gruts to bond with, and a really force on any snow filled battlefield!
Master of the Hunt:
The master of the hunt is the final new sculpt in the wave. Since he's in the common pack, he's an Uncommon Hero that fights for Einar. He's a perfect addition to Einar's forces, and a very exciting figure to field in an army.

I must disagree with you on that, my friend. He has a high level of detail, a great paint job, and he is the best of Moltenclaw's sculpts.

Moltenclaw is clearly what Mimring always should have been. I picture his flame as pouring out in a parabolic arc, and his head turning to make a strafing run at the next four hexes. He is a great Lizard King, and still more affordable than most Dragon choices.
The Ice Troll seems really nicely balanced. You have to be careful, since, as others have said, they can die quickly, but as long as they don't take all four wounds at once, they can bounce back pretty well, even on normal terrain. I look forward to using them with the Arrow Gruts. The Master of the Hunt, hyped to be a Hunter booster, isn't, but we'll get over that. As for his powers, I like him a lot, but I can't help but wonder what the "game reality" reason is for him to sometimes add 3 to his range. Does it depend on which javelin he grabs? Does the wind direction have something to do with it? Maybe he needs to stretch out before a long range attack, and can't always warm up in time? Does his helmet go askew, messing with his depth perception? Otherwise, a sometimes-long-range sniper with Attack 4 is a balanced theme. Overall, great job! |

Moltenclaw: How is this guy worth 20 more points than Mimring? Yeah his base attack and life are both 1 point greater, but his special has less range, even if it is slightly more versatile it doesn't have the same damage potential as Mimring's and let's be honest lava resistant is pretty much a thematic power (unless WotC decides to release some lava terrain ). I will give him this: Moltenclaw will make a pretty awesome dungeon boss for a volcano/lava crawl.
Ice Troll Berserker: cool thematic abilities that still work without ice and snow, the paint job is a little corny in that picture but I'll withold my judgement until I have it in my hands. Master of the Hunt: This guy is going to be an awesome hero killer! Mortal Strike is amazing! It's like deadly strike except the second wound is guaranteed! This guy, the bugbears, and Siege are the figures in this wave I am most excited for! (sculpt is a little bland though). |

Technically, his range is the same for the special.

MotH is really nice. I am surprised that he is uncommon and no hunter synergy. Not loving the Ice Troll but Moltenclaw is an interesting figure. All in all another great job by the design team... peace

MOLTENCLAW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The best sculpt in HeroScape in my opinion. The master of the hunt controls the world of small or medium heroes. The ice troll is very efficient, especially on snow. All the previews are over. Bummer. Great job design team for the most exciting wave so far.

Rym, I'm going to hunt you down (ha, pun) and take your Master of the Hunt! He and the Frost Giant are probably going to be the most fielded uncommons of this wave.
Moltenclaw is pretty sweet. I'd rather have him over Mimring, but that's just me. The Ice Troll is... OK, I guess. He's not spectacular, but he'll be fun to play regardless. |

Someone mentioned the Ice Troll's sculpt was dodgy. While its a little different, I don't think its dodgy, it is more the paintjob that makes it look crap. Fix the paintjob and it will be a fine figure.
I like the twist on Mimring's Fireline (and actually think it is a much more useful ability). I must echo the concerns over too many uncommon figures. It is frankly ridiculous and waters down the game somewhat. I see the need for some more common creatures with more life, but not as many as we're getting. Don't like the master of the hunt figure much, but agree it should have been unique. |

So is there any news in the air about D4 or the first Wave 11? Because this is the first D&D release without a teaser/press release of the next set. ?? Or maybe I'm just impatient

Moltenclaw: pseudo mimring
MotH: Darn, no hunter bonuses. 140 points? unit debate with eltahale? Ice troll: I like everything about it except I would have preferred berserker charge to the ice charge so Valguard can boost it. |
