Big Boards... Big fun, or Big trouble?

At our regular Heroscape sessions, we tend to have a variety of sizes for the boards we do battle on.
Among my personal favorite are the larger more elaborate boards that make use of several master sets plus multiple terrain expansions.
I enjoy a board that covers an entire dining room table (fully extended), with terrain heights extending 20 levels or higher.
I like to have towering castles and crashing waterfalls, and monstrous plateaus that ranged characters can position themselves comfortably on, without fear of a melee units sword thrust in their chests.

All this board love aside, it does bring several points of contention to the table. Most notably, time issues. A board of that size could last several hours with all the time it takes for figures to traverse the expansive terrain.
A board of significant height will prompt more flying squads and ranged units to cover the ground with little difficulty. And this severely handicaps our slow moving...
