Being approached by a strange stranger...

Posted November 16th, 2010 at 11:01 AM by Sylvano the Wasabus
Iíve wanted to write this for such a long time.

This is the creepiest thing ever.

It is such a hard story to tell.
I donít think that Iím prejudiced and I certainly donít want to give that impression. I know we all judge people by their appearance- we are trained from birth to do it- so how can we avoid all that baggage that suddenly pops up when you meet someone unusual?

Iím in the final weeks of my job and I had to go the main office to fill out papers about closing out my pension savings. I ended up being there at lunch time and so I decided I might as well treat myself to a meal in their big cafeteria. Itís huge- it actually has three tiers to it, and it was really packed. I had to wait in line while other people were waiting for their steaks to cook. Holy dead cow! Steaks for lunch! My usual peanut butter in a bag suddenly seemed really pathetic. So I ordered a steak!

When it was done I paid...

When scenarios turn bad...

Posted November 13th, 2010 at 09:43 AM by Sylvano the Wasabus
Oh last night we tried to get a Scape game in after supper and before bed on a school night. Thatís always a challenge. Itís been a while since my daughter played with us- school is very busy for her- and so we were all excited to play together.

We usually play simple combat scenarios, usually my daughter and I against my two older sons, but tonight I thought maybe we could do something a little different, something like Kaiyuís Heroes of Scape.

While my daughter finished up her homework and I was doing the dishes my eldest son made a map and a complex scenario for a few heroes to blunder through. There was to be objectives, riddles, quests, and strange creatures that might help you, hinder you, or devour you. All in all it was to be an excellent after dinner exercise! Real dessert!

I chose Arkmer because I like his personality. Iím not much of an elf-lover, but heís not over-powered and at our house he gets used a lot because...

A Wake

Posted November 9th, 2010 at 01:25 PM by Sylvano the Wasabus
First, itís very nice to see this site come alive. A death has a funny way of making one evaluate what one really has and value it. We have a lot - A great game, and each other. Itís almost kind of a relief to have WOTC of it. Heroscapers awake!

Secondly, crap. Damn. Rats. Although I was not-so-enthused about the Dand D waves the death news stunned me. Where will new players be able to get terrain? Anyone can make interesting customs, but itís the terrain....

A game at our house often is often made of three time sections: 1) building the map. This is sometimes the longest section. We love water, especially streams and waterfalls and lately we have really been getting into building maps that have caves and dungeons and shadow as well. I have been making cave entrances out of Styrofoam- when I get one Iím proud of, and when I get my camera repaired, Iíll show you.

Part 2 of our game is choosing armies. Iím very slow at...

What is a Wasabus?

Posted November 3rd, 2010 at 01:17 PM by Sylvano the Wasabus
If there was a bus where a Wasabus was, would the Wasabus walk?
Of course he would. But heíd trash the bus first.

My younger son and I were talking this morning before school. He was saying that he learns things faster and understands them if they have a story, as opposed to just boring facts. Of course this is true and we began to talk about things that seem to have stories attached.

I always did fine in math but I really excelled in permutations and exponents, because to me, the numbers have a relationship which is almost a story. All numbers have personality and together they make families and this was most evident to me in certain numerical relationships.

I have read much about the perceptions of some autistic and aspergian mathematicians and for them numbers are individuals with distinct personalities- and it is this assigned history that aids the savant in making rapid and astounding calculations.

This is about two things: Halloween, and the day after Halloween. Which one was more wicked?

Part one: Halloween

I have to say I had a really great Halloween. Itís a great event but when you get older you sort of lose track of that. But Iím lucky - I am experiencing it anew through my three year old.

He finds it baffling. He dressed as a monster (itís a small green monster costume- very cute on him, and rather fitting seeing as he is a bit of a monster) and we went to strangerís houses and they gave us candy. Itís all the things heís not supposed to do and he knows it.
Last year it terrified him. This year he missed his nap in all the anticipation and then was a monster basket case by the time it got dark. I pulled him around on a wagon for a while, kept him going with a steady IV of potatoes chips and then we went home.

My daughter and eldest son went as the Majere twins. My daughter had this...
