Menchy's Obsessions

You know, having a blog is something I have always dreamt about, but now that I actually have one, I feel lost in a sea of endless possibilities. I guess I'll just use my first entry to chat about some of my current obsessions.

Music

The Static Jacks:http://www.myspace.com/thestaticjacks
They are a local band from my high school, but they definitley have some talent. They recently opened for Smoosh and Tokyo Police Club in the city (that's New York to you non-Jerseyans.) and have played at some great venues, including the Lion's Den and the Knitting Factory clubs (also in the city). Their music is neither deep nor groundbreaking, but there's something infectious about the honesty and the fun behind the lyrics.

M.I.A.
This Sri Lankan born rapper is anything but ordinary. Her infectious beats and interesting lyrics make for some great songs. She is definitley like nothing you have ever heard before.

iTunes This: Paper Planes

Taylor Swift
A true country musician, her songs are both entertaining and loveable. Although I fear she is utterly replaceable, for now she rules Myspace, and has produced some great hits.

TV

A Shot at Love with Tila Tequila
Tuesdays at 10 on MTV
This show is fantastic. It is the epitemy of reality show garbage, and I love every second of it. The show features bisexual model, singer, and general Myspace Queen Tila Tequila as she searches through a cast of guys and girls for her soul mate. It's always good for a laugh, and it certainly does entertain.

Books

In the Time of the Butterfiles- Julia Alvarez
We read this book for school, and it is simply fantastic. The book, set in the Dominican Republic, follows the story of 4 sisters as they become involved in an underground revolution against the dictator Trujillo. The book is told in 12 chapters, with each chapter being told from the perspectives of one of the four sisters. It's engaging and powerful. I highly recommend it.

Well, I guess that's it for now. That was much more fun than expected. Let me know what you guys think.

Fantastic is the last word that I would use when describing any show on MTV.
