Back in March, Deroche had wanted to nominate this fellow for the month of April but due to his sporadic visits to HeroScapers.com thought an interview would be nigh unobtainable. Well, I got a hold of him - and we've got a bonus interview for you this month. Enjoy!

'Scaper-of-the-Month #78 is...

Lord Trask

PROFILE:

Who are you, really?

Larry Long of Burkburnett, TX.

How old are you?

48

What is your occupation?

Electrical Engineer

What other interests do you have?

I love gaming (board games, strategy games, MMORPGs, and video). I also enjoy travelling to places I have not been to.

What’s another board game you enjoy and why?

I’m currently playing a lot of Summoner Wars. Its lineage is traced back to heroscape and a lot of the elements that make ‘scape such a great game are in SW as well.

Who, or what, is you avatar and how did you come up with your username?

Lord Trask is the central character in H. Beam Piper’s Space Viking sci-fi novel published in the '60s. This is my favorite book and I recommend it to anyone that will listen. Since it is public domain, it is available, for free, on project Gutenberg here. My avatar is from the cover of my copy of the book.

HEROSCAPE:

When and how did you first get into HeroScape?

My son (killergoat72) was 10 when I first saw Heroscape as it was released in 2004. It looked like a great way to get him into gaming, so I purchased it for him. It sat for a while until we went to TRU for the first National Heroscape day in 2006 and got our Nerak as well as several boosters. When I was a kid, my dad and I would play baseball in the back yard for hours. It was our thing. Heroscape has been that for my oldest son and I. I will always be grateful for that.

What is your favorite aspect of HeroScape and why?

I believe the interlocking terrain is the most important feature for me. This allows any scenario to be played and gives heroscape the visual impact it has.

To whom is your allegiance and why?

In the words of Astronima (Power Rangers in Space) “I’m on MY side.”

Who are your favorite heroes and why?
Unique: Cyprien. He was the muscle in my army that won the Florida Fenzy NHSD 2011. The last photo is me with the coolest HS Trophy I have seen!
Uncommon: Fen Hydra. 4 attacks of 4! However, I have never done well with them at all.
Common: Drow Chainfighter. I really would like to make a 500-pt army with 20 of those guys!

What are your favorite squads and why?
Unique: Tagawa Samurai. Love the poses and the Blood Lust can really hit hard.
Common: Granite Guardians. Nothing cooler that moving an entire wall of rocks at your opponent!

What is your favorite Special Ability and why?

Its pretty dull, but I really like the Defense Aura Raelin (v1) provides.

What is your favorite map and why?

FORTRESS GIGANTILOSSALHUGENORMIGUS

How can you go wrong with 10 VWs and 8 TTs?

COMMUNITY:

What do you enjoy most about HeroScapers.com?

My favorite part was the excitement of new releases. It was cool to get a peak at what was coming and have everyone be really excited about what the new stuff meant in relation to the rest of the game.

Describe your favorite HeroScape moment.

In Slug-a-Thon last year at Gencon my opponent was simply killing my dividers with DW 8000 while I couldn’t put a glove on his front wall of Warriors of Ashra with a buff from Raelin. I realized I was done for (my army was ALL Dividers + Isamu). Since it was new OM time, I placed all my OMs on Isamu and proceeded to go all the way across the board to get at Raelin. My first attack was 5 skulls to no Shields and I killed her the next turn. Eventually, I was able to pull out a victory. My poor opponent was simultainiously gracious and unbelieving.

What's the farthest you've traveled to play HeroScape?

870 miles.

Is there any member of HeroScapers.com you’d really like to play against?

I used to play in the DFW area and got to play against a lot of really active members. My two trips to GenCon let me play against a lot more of them. I don’t think I have played NYYS and would like to meet him at the table.

Why did you get involved in trading 'Scape, and about how many trades have you made?

I built my collection buying and selling ‘Scape on Craig's List and eBay. It's an addiction now. I’m heroscape_seller on eBay.[/b]

UNIT DEBATE:

Which unit would you say is better: Laglor or Sir Gilblert?

Laglor can help an army, but Gilbert can make the KoW into a powerhouse. I think Sir Gilbert is the best Flagbearer.

What two units would you like to see in the next Unit Debate?

Roman Archers vs. Grut Archers.

LIE DETECTOR:

Tell us two true things about yourself and one lie.
1. I’m a member of MENSA.
2. I’m allergic to Brocoli.
3. I love Chick-flicks.

THREE FUN FAVORITES:

Favorite book: Space Viking (see above)

Favorite food: Chipotle Chicken at Cantina Laredo.

Favorite movie: My Cousin Vinnie.

CLOSING:

What message do you have for the ‘Scaper community?

If you have never been to a tournament, you need to go to one. You will never find a better class of complete strangers in your life. The people that you meet at one are truly representative of how great the ‘Scaper community is.

No one can be into Heroscape and Chick Flicks at the same time. I refuse to believe it.

That was against me!

Clearly I am incredibly gracious (and humble, and good-looking, and...) to nominate you for a Heroscaper-of-the-month interview after the ass-whooping you gave me with Isamu that day.

I really want the gallery back up and running. I'm using Flickr now and the images are not showing up in IE9 (but Firefox looks fine). Also it was a pain to track down the necessary URLs using Flickr. Oh, and I couldn't animate his avatar image.

Sorry, I didn't explain myself well. I use photobucket to upload pictures, not flickr. Those pictures show up. Photobucket also allows you to automatically copy and paste links and videos too.

Safari, also no pics. If you click on the Giganto-whatzit one it takes you to Killergoat's map thread, so you can browse it from there. Great interview! I'm calling the chick flick one a lie.
