Heroscape Thanks

Posted November 27th, 2008 at 06:29 AM by rdhight
Beyond Heroscape itself, and this site itself, here are some things I'm thankful for as I sit down to some holiday 'Scaping:

10. Roads and ladders, for being the crucial terrain pieces that increase the pace of the game, instead of bogging it down more and more with every special object added to a map.

9. Wargamers HQ, for finding an alternative to brick & mortar lameness and eBay lameness alike.

8. spider_poison, for not pulling any punches on units that suck big time lack competitive worth.

7. The opponents I've played who made a maximum effort to beat me. Nothing can kill the fun of a board game like knowing the other guy isn't trying. No matter where you played me or who won (or why), thanks for going all-out.

6. Stingers, Marcu, Isamu, Tor-Kul-Na, and Cyprien. We now have a ranged common with 3 base attack, some more non-silly d20 units, and good filler-- all very long overdue. If Heroscape gets the WotC death...

My favorite tools

There are quite a few good Heroscape resources out there, whole categories of them that I'm not going to touch on; these are just the particular ones I find myself using the most and putting the most stock in. Thanks to everyone who contributed to any of these. If you've got some spare rep, these are some great places to send it.

  • The Books of Heroscape and of Marvelscape
The first place you should go when you have a question or dispute. If reading the card and the Book thread doesn't answer your question there, the Book of the appropriate unit is a great place to ask it. And the Books are just a good general-purpose guide. I'm very lazy about looking up a unit online when the actual card is right in the next room!

  • Official Basic FAQ (opens as webpage) and Advanced FAQ (opens as PDF)
Read these before you post. No, really. Read them. Before you post.

My highlight reel

I probably won't be using this blog for much but content display, so here are the few article-class threads I've started:

Too many army cards: a very bad thing
This thread clarifies a common piece of advice often given to new army-builders.

What would you do to win?
This one is good not because of my first post itself, but because some very skilled tournament players, and just plain smart people, came back with quite a few thoughtful replies about sportsmanship and what players should expect from their opponents.

Counter-Drafting Notes
Suggestions for getting some lesser-used figures off the bench at times when they can play their part well.

Venom or SotM Drake?
Captain America or Nilfheim?
Templars, Grok Riders, or EI?
Morsbane or Jorhdawn/Chardris?
A few unit comparisons. Nothing special, but they're detailed, and I think my conclusions are sound.

Embrace the Suck

Posted March 13th, 2008 at 01:09 PM by rdhight
Bad units in general seem to have gotten a lot of exposure on here lately, such as here, here, here, and here. The latest one is here. I've posted in a lot of these threads, but I feel like I've done a pretty bad job of explaining what I think. Here's my take on the big picture.

One line of thinking maintains that there really are no truly bad units, that every card can be powerful when played properly in the right army and in its own favorable situation. I remember one post by Revdyer saying, "I am willing to allow anyone who has play-tested a figure for 1,000 hours to propose a different point value for it. But, until you have spent that much time play-testing, I'd stick with the point values established by the professionals." The idea is that we as players aren't really qualified to say that Kaemon Awa is better than Runa. We think he is, but we don't know. It just...
