One Step Closer (a trip down memory lane)

Memories. All kinds of things can trigger memories, I read or heard somewhere that your sense of smell can trigger specific memories, I don't know if its true or not just thought it was interesting. One thing that triggers some very vivid memories is this song. I'm going take a trip down memory lane courtesy of Linkin Park...

It reminds me of the first time I heard the song, it was at our friendly not-so-local game store (we had to drive 45-50 minutes to get there) right when their CD was out or about to come out, near the end of 2000, I was a senior in High School. I was playing in a the weekly magic tournament. Magic was my life back then, I had been playing for 3-4 years by then, and it was all I did, school half a day, then work 8 hours, then magic. All my money was spent on Magic any money that wasn't spent on Magic went to gas so I could drive to play Magic. All my spare time was spent playing Magic. Even in school I was thinking about Magic, the back of each of my notebooks were full of deck lists.

Needless to say I didn't have a girlfriend (though it wasn't for lack of trying, there was this one girl...but that's a story for another time) and my only friends were the guys that I played Magic with, we were a tight group of friends of all different ages and social classes, some of us probably wouldn't have been friends because of those differences if it wasn't for Magic.

This song reminds me of those friends, and the times we shared together, the long trips to out of state Magic tournaments, the late night play testing sessions the night before, the long grind that is a large Magic tournament. Great times and great friends. It reminds of the time one of the guys used the store credit that he won to buy Settlers of Catan. See where this is going?

We would supplement our Magic playing with some Settlers every now and then, that eventually turned into Starfarers of Catan and even an occasional game of Cranium. We would play video games too, Halo, Smash Brothers and the like, but these guys were my introduction into board gaming. Eventually we all got split up, college has a way of doing to high school friends, and I had a really hard time playing Magic after that, I found a couple of different groups on campus but it just wasn't the same. I would still play on trips back home during my freshman and sophomore years and I even tried MtgO but again it wasn't the same thing. I eventually gave it completely my junior year here, but by then I had found a new hobby. Board games!

I didn't do much gaming while at college (other than some LAN games of Unreal or Halo) and had all but forgotten about Settlers and Starfarers by that point, but sophomore year my roommate brought in a game called Carcassonne, we played it and it immediately reminded me of Settlers. I immediately went out and got a copy from our FLGS now we had 2 board games. I was hooked at that point, we had a nice group of board gamer so we started playing more and more board games. At one point I was considering getting into Warhammer with the girlfriend, she seemed interested and we were going to buy our armies, but as fate would have it we were at Wal-Mart one night and I found Heroscape in the toy aisle. Now here I am, not playing Warhammer posting to a blog on a Heroscape site, you probably know the rest.

But that is what this song triggers for me. Memories of how I got from Magic to the board gaming hobby and Heroscape.

On HQ I remember your tale of first experiencing Linking Park while Magic-ing! Very cool to have the strong nostalgia tied to the music. Definitely know the feeling.
By the way, HEEEEAVVVY MUSIC!!

Again, I can relate. Though had not consciously thought about it until you wrote it.

I agree with that statement as well. I am not the most approachable guy. I am not disfigured or anything, I am just not social in real life. I prefer to listen then to speak. If it were not for some of the games I have been involved in in the past I would not have met some of the great people I have had the pleasure of meeting over the years. There is like an unspoken bond between gamers that just can't be found in many other hobbies.

Thanks for Sharing Nether.

That is definitely one of the things that I liked about Magic (and any game really now that I think about it) it brings people together and in my case people who might not have met otherrwise.

Thanks for reading guys.

What a great story Nether. Music has been a big part of my life, and old songs always trigger memories of many long nights playing D&D. I had some of the best times of my life with my friends then. I spent all my free time with those guys and our Monster Manuals and pewter figures.

After my sophomore year of high-school, I didn't play games anymore. I lost touch with my old friends when I went to a different school and I was totally into sports. Then college, marriage, kids and work happened. It wasn't until I discovered Heroscape that I realized how much I missed gaming. And now I get to share this great game with my son and the new people I've met through this site.

I haven't seen anyone from that early period of my life since high-school. But I just learned that my girl's second grade teacher is one of my old friend's mom. I gave her my number to give to her son, but sadly I haven't heard from him yet. The nostalgic part of my brain hopes it will be great to see him. But my reality side says it can't be the same as it was. I'd still love to see him though, and who knows, maybe I can turn him on to Heroscape!

So, here is how old I am. This is one of my trigger songs:
