Wow, ten tears goes by fast. That is right, in case you have not heard, C3G is celebrating its 10th anniversary and to go along with that I have managed to track down the Father of C3G in his damp cave of bats and subjected him to interrogation. Thanks to everyone who supplied questions. Time to get this party started.
Lord Pyre: How big, exactly, are your cockles?
Of my heart? Standard sized, as far as I know. I haven’t met a cardiologist, though.
MrNobody: When was the moment you realized C3G was really taking off?
I’m in disbelief on a daily basis. But the Fantastic Four Master Set was a banner moment for us and made me feel like we’d really left a lasting legacy.
Arch-vile: What are some of your favorite non-Heroscape board games?
Here’s my top ten other games besides that beauty C3G Superheroscape:

Spidey: Better superhero: Spider-man or Batman?
Flash. Just kidding. Batman has no superpowers. But better straight up hero? Batman. He’s just cooler.
Better person?? Probably Batman. Spidey does the whole “I think I’m a nice guy, but don’t people treat me like a nice guy, when the actual way I treat people in my life is inconsiderate” thing.
Honestly, though, I like them both.
Arch-vile: What’s your dream comic book movie?
I’ve already had some incredible cinematic experiences with comic book heroes. Batman Begins and Dark Knight both got three viewings from me in the theater and I absolutely love them. I love what the MCU has done with its incredible ambition. There’s so much comic book goodness out there on the big screen from the big two (even if a lot of the non-Nolanverse DCU stuff has been pretty “meh”).
I think at this point I almost wholly prefer watching serialized superhero dramas to movies (though the MCU is kind of the best of both worlds). If I had to choose just an isolated movie that I’d love to see made and haven’t seen yet, I’m going with Invincible. Just the first few twists and turns of the story would make a really cool origin movie and hopefully spawn a full trilogy or more of his adventures.
Lobster: What’s your idea of a perfect date?
When I was in college, my best friend and I used to note dates that were palindromes, like 10–02–2001 (that was a fun one). I don’t think any new ones are coming up any time soon.
To be more serious, though, at this point any time alone with my wife outside of work or childcare duties is hugely welcome. Nothing fancy needed, just some peace, quiet, and closeness.
Lazy Orang: Did you ever resolve your differences with anyone by bonding over your mothers having the same first name?

CzarChasm: Marvel or DC?
DC for the depth of heroes I love from my youth. Marvel for the movies. Image for reading comics now (shout outs to Invincible, Saga, and Morning Glories).
Soundwarp: If two birds both flew in opposing directions along the invisible god line that dictates all actions, while at the same time a 3rd hitherto unrelated bird spontaneously became the mother of both of the aforementioned birds, and I ate a pair of shoes thinking they were a personification of the sense of loss one experiences when looking at a misspelled W, what would the combined effect of all these actions be on our next Presidential Election?
Maybe?
I mean, not to “go there,” but I’m mostly in the camp of most things would be better than what we’ve got.
redstang: If you had to field a 1,000 point army using only unique heroes for a competitive tournament, which figures would be on your dream team?
For both comfort level and utility, I’d go original X-Men. Prof. X gives you solid turn efficiency with his double activations and has one of the more reliable, flexible, powerful defensive abilities in the game with Psychic Defense X. Cyclops’ order marker reordering power can get around a lot of the stuff that annoys order marker hub armies and Optic Blast can get around a lot of the stealth powers out there by choosing spaces instead of targeting figures. It can also get multiple targets on a turn with a fairly solid blast, which is nice. Jean brings extra movement for your figures, displacement and movement denial for enemy figures, and auto-wounding, all in a pretty efficient package, Beast gives you order marker removal and multiple melee attacks, Iceman gives you another solid special attack and at least another chance at order marker removal, and Angel keeps everyone in good position (or out of bad position) by swooping around. It’s a solid little army and I know each figure well to be able to strategize fairly effectively.
That said, I would expect to have my butt handed to me, as I’m not particularly competitive as a player.
Karat: C3G has grown, changed, and evolved over the years. What one thing about C3G’s current condition was the most unexpected for you?
The biggest surprise, and I apologize for how incredibly egotistical this must sound, but you must understand this post is coming from a guy who’s posted almost 100,000 times on Heroscapers, has led over 100 designs, has been there from the beginning, made the first post of the project, and once playtested Batman (I) about 20 times just to get him moving: I’m surprised, delighted, and humbled at how much this project doesn’t need me.
I feel like Doctor Frankenstein getting to witness my (shared) creation take on a life of its own, but rather than viewing it as a monster, I see it as an absolute gift and joy. To be able to come back and not feel like I have to do the heavy lifting to keep it alive but to be able to just sit in where the project is at and enjoy it as so many people work so diligently to make it move forward is truly amazing to me. You all are amazing to me!
Lord Pyre: How much does your wife support your C3G hobby? Has she ever played a game with you? Does she roll her eyes every time you mention something about it?
We did a great thing when we got married and went to Financial Peace University with Dave Ramsey (online—great gift from the in-laws) and learned how to budget properly, and every month we have a great thing called “fun money.” I don’t judge how many shoes or purses or dresses she buys, because it comes from her fun money. The same goes with my minis and board games. I mostly play when she’s asleep or not around, but so long as the kid is taken care of by somebody or sleeping herself, she’s fine with me having hobby time. But, yeah, no, she doesn’t play a bit.
Spidey: Ok, I am going to go controversial here.
- What is the one contribution to C3G that you wish you could have a do-over on?
- Who was the one contributer that you feel burned out before they really made their mark in C3G? In other words, who would you like to see more from?
- What one thing could be done (by anyone, not necessarily you) to keep C3G growing?
1. I feel like I could list so many things here. I wish things would’ve ended better with Griffin. I love that guy like a brother.
I wish I had anticipated how clueless we were about the competitive balance in the game sooner and that we’d been able to get better perspective on these things sooner so that the re-evaluations that sometimes bog the group down would be much lighter or non-existent.
I got my do-over on vehicle destructible object (VDO) rules. I really love how those are turning out now after never being quite content with them.
I still hope and plan to have a do-over on a lot of scenario and campaign stuff, but that definitely feels unfinished now.
But overall it’s been an amazing time and I don’t wish away any of the fun I have, great designs I’ve been a part of, even that I stepped down when I did, and especially that I’m able to be as involved as I am now!
2. Goodpig. I feel like we just scratched the surface on that guy’s creative talent and depth of imagination. He was a really cool guy to have around too.
Honorable mentions to Margloth and Hellfire, who have both at least popped in now and again and posted some crazy cool design thoughts. I’d love to see both come back and Hellfire is totally needed for his aliens love.
To go a tad controversial on it, these are guys who definitely fulfilled their potential, but it’d make me so happy to see GreyOwl and Griffin both come back and do one more lead design. It’d just be such a neat bow on a great decade run that we’ve had.
3. It’s always been the answer and always will be: play it. Whether that’s playtesting (incredibly helpful), just playing at home (we love to hear about this!), doing tourneys like T-Spinny (Tornado), or anything associated, the more folks are out there playing it and letting us know about it, the more this group will live on and even thrive.
quozl: What are the three most important things in life for you?
- God
- My wife
- My daughter
flameslayer93: Have you ever wanted to live in Gotham?
NYC is cool. And Gotham is basically NYC at night with insanely worse crime and really scary people. So, not really. I have wanted to live in Wayne Manor, though! We almost rented an apartment on Wayne Street once and I was so excited just at the idea of calling it “Wayne Manor.”
I almost pushed to move to Batcave, NC for similar reasons, but ended up down in Alabama instead.
Lazy Orang:
- What stories, characters and games particularly interest you outside the superhero genre?
- What surprised you most about the first ten years of C3G? What are you most proud of?
- What excites you most about the next ten years of C3G?
1. Well my board game love is noted. I’ve never been particularly into video games. Probably my most played are things like Age of Empires, Civilization, Supersmash Bros, and Madden NFL.
In terms of stories and characters, two of the graphic novels I most enjoy right now (listed earlier) aren’t superhero stories at all (Saga and Morning Glories). I really like sci-fi, decently like fantasy, and enjoy a good meaty drama with twists and turns. My streaming is pretty eclectic, and so long as it’s fairly well written, feels “honest” enough, and has some interesting twists, I’ll try it out.
Probably my least favorite things in terms of entertainment are reality TV, game shows, and crime procedurals.
2. Well I sort of answered this one in my response to Karat already, but I think just that we made it 10 years and that we have such an incredible depth and breadth of creations is pretty awesome. Also, Kool-Aid Man! Who saw that one coming??
3. More of the same, friends!
But, specifically: terrain expansions (underwater and space and bookshelf skyscrapers), campaigns (X-Men, Knightfall, Blackest Night, Crisis on Infinite Earths), more event heroes (Parallax! Watcher!), more VDOs (Batmobile! Invisible Jet!), and especially, hopefully, more chances to get together with the great friends I’ve made on here to enjoy this haul of riches!

The problem with Debby is you run into a conundrum if their mom’s name is Debbie or something.
I once was about to kill a dude, but then he said his mom’s name was Ashley which, get this...is my mom’s name! So we became really good friends. But like a month later I found out his mom was actually “Ashlee” so I had to kill him. That was awkward, believe you me! |
