Utgar/Einar Alliance Army Construction

Well met!

Jackofhearts (Utgar) and I (Einar) are allied for the Gang of Five's (now Six?) 8/13 510 point-per-player, General-specific, 3-team game, against 2 other teams (Ullar/Aquilla & Jandar/Vydar) (see my most previous blog entry). I don't know Jack , so I have no idea what kind of player he is, his experience (as a gamer in General or with Heroscape in particular), or what units he would like to include in his army (here's hoping he comments ).

The scenario/map still unrevealed at this time, I plan on taking an army comprised of units from the following list: Kaemon, Kozuke, Izumi, Ninjas of the Northern Wind, Tagawa Samurai, Tagawa Samurai Archers, Gurei-Oni, and Red Wyrmlings. It would, of course, be no problem for Jack and I to field armies that are totally independent, in which case the army ideas in my previous blog entry would apply. However, it would be to build our armies to compliment each other.

As I won't be fielding the 10th, on principle, I expect Stingers to be at the top of the list of units you all would advise Jack to bring. I'm also thinking Deathreavers. But Utgar has soooo many choices. Grimnak/Nerak/Heavy Gruts; Beasts/Arrow Gruts; Tor-Kul-Na/Nagrubs; Hydras; Mindflayers (proxied). Oh my! Given the types of units Einar has available, what 510 point Utgar army would you field (and what would you advise me to field to compliment it)?

I prefer the Marro combinations with Tor-Kul-Na, Stingers x3, Nargrubs x2 and Drudge (just 'cause).

That being said I'm not that good at the game yet and was almost beaten last night when my youngest took Grimnack, Tornak, heavy gruts x 3 and Blade Gruts x 2.

Not really proud of that win, I should've been able to pick him off at distance easily but the dice gods were angry with me and Grimnak (with 1 squad of blade gruts of all things) chomped his way through half my Stingers until I finally got to him. Then it got worse as an attempt to knock out the heavies and Tornak from height kept shooting blanks. Finally TKN and the grubs came to the rescue.

The drudge finished off the last of the Blades.
Fun game but I should've done much better than that.

I second the recommendation of Tor-Kul-Na. However, I would also recommend Phantom Knights:
TKN 220
PKs x3 430
Grubs x2 490
Marcu 510 (wound sponge)

Your suggested army (Samurai-heavy: Tagawa archers, Kaemon, big bad Oni, and Red wyrmlings) has plenty of special attacks and some ranged units, but you are lacking a strong tank (Gurei aside, who is only a stuart tank, compared to the panzer that is TKN) and mobile anti-ranged units; TKN can fill the role of Tank, and the PKs can take out any cheerleaders, as well as lock down any long-range threats (aka Krav) until your units can punch through any screen (with specials) and close with them.

Quite sound advice! PKs are also a good screen for Wyrmlings. You listening Jack!

I like big gruts and I can't lie.

Actually, he should bring ranged units. Your choices for Einar's army is more melee based, so you should offset that with his range. Arrow gruts, deathwalker/rats, and the PK (pseudo range with large move) are all good choices.

That was my thinking, too. Although my choice of range, for him (reveling in my hypocrisy ), would be Stingers. Paying attention out there, Jack!

I didn't know the author of a blog could edit comments on it. Kind of eerie.

You may find inspiration here.

As a note to others Out There, I'm offering the use of any game figures the other players don't have from my own collection (which includes everthing). Also eligible are proxy figures and cards for D2, although we may actually have the expansion by the game date.

As this is our first General Specific Team Game, another discussion we've been having amongst ourselves are considerations of two possible options:

1. Allowing figure powers that read "figures you control" to help their partner's figures, or

2. Actually allowing players to field up to 150 points (of the 510 point total) of their partner's General's figures, so they would automatically so benefit.

Other things we could try after this game include making this a series of games, or reforming the teams based on the new alliances alignment to be announced when River of Blood comes out! Cool...

chas is an extremely generous and kind host, and any of you within a 100 miles are missing an extremely fun time, not just in the play itself, but in the inner and outer discussions about what armies to field. That being said . . .

"Discussion between ourselves"!? This is the first I'm hearing about this! No way should Raelin be allowed to protect her Vydar allies!

I'd go further with the second idea, and have the players distribute the figures from both allied Generals between themselves as they see fit, just so each of their armies are, in this case, 510 points (and not messing with any other rules).

I think we should leave the distinction between "figures you control" and "friendly figures." The designers have stated that they write the powers that way for a reason.

Ninjaed! But weren't you included in the "discussion"?

Some Army Suggestions

Well met!

I am grateful for all of the comments posted thus far, both here and in the forum (a few of you will recognize your suggestions ), and hope to solicit many more!

There are a fair number of you who advocate my bringing mostly Wyrmlings to this alliance. They (and everything else ), of course, need a screen. Phantom Knights seem like a match made in Valhalla.

For Einar . . .

I.

390 Red Wyrmlings x 13
120 Kaemon (or Tagawa Samurai?)
510

II.

300 Wyrmlings x 10
110 NotNW
100 Kozuke
510

III.

270 Wyrmlings x 9
120 Kaemon
120 Tagawa Samurai
510

IV.

270 Wyrmlings x 9
130 Tagawa Samurai Archers x 2
110 NotNW
510

It is scary for me to commit to Wyrmlingscape to this extent. (There was, of course, a suggestion to play only Wyrmlings!) If I, for whatever reason, need to supply my own screen, I could play the Izumi instead of 2 Wyrmlings in any of these builds.

For Utgar . . .

A.
210 PKs x 3
180 Stingers x 3
120 Hydra (or Torin?) (or Krug?)
510

B.
210 PKs x 3
120 Krug
100 Swog x 4
80 ArrowGruts x 2
510

But with Deathreavers . . .

For Utgar . . .

C(1).
160 Shurrak
120 Hydra (or Krug?)
120 Deathreavers x 3
110 Brunak (to carry Kaemon)
510

C(2).
160 Shurrak
150 Mimring
120 Krug
80 Arrow Gruts x 2 (or Deathreavers x 2?)
510

C(3).
150 Mimring
120 Krug
120 Deathreavers x 3
80 Arrow Gruts x 2
510

D.
200 Mindflayer x 2 (Shades x 2?)
180 Stingers x 3
120 Deathreavers x 3
10 Isamu
510

E.
210 Heavy Gruts x 3
120 Grimnak
120 Deathreavers x 3
50 Nerak
10 Isamu
510

F.
220 Tor-Kul-Na
120 Hydra (Krug?)
90 Nagrubs x 3
80 Deathreavers x 2
510

With Deathreavers and PKs, together . . . naaaaah!

It might be interesting to play I or IV with E, or II or III with D.

Which would you put with which?

B is 520. I like D, but I'm not that big of a fan of the wyrmlings (gasp!)

Fixed. Moved to Deathreavers . . .

Now, if only Jack would tell me what he likes!

Taelord & Minions

I should have thought of this for Jack . . .

330 Minions x 3
180 Taelord
510

but what then should I play . . .

I don't know about most of your army, but if he plays Taelord and Minions, you should play the Tagawa Samurai. Your opponent will probably go after Taelord, and the Tagawa can get bloodlust with ease. Once the minions fall, the fully bloodlusted samurai could almost finish the job themselves.

Some ranged support would also be good. I'd go with...

Tagawa Samurai 120
Ashigaru Harquebus X4 240
Kaemon Awa 120
480 points, 20 spaces.

Or you could use the samurai archers.

Tagawa Samurai 120
Tagawa Archers X4 260
Kaemon Awa 120
500 points, 16 spaces.

Just a few possibilities.

EDIT: I just realized you can't use Eldgrim or Isamu, neither are Einar.

I like it, especially the second army, as I get to play my Einar faves! But wasting 10 points . . . ?

I could make it, but with so many cards . . .

120 Tagawa Samurai
120 Kaemon
110 NotNW
100 Kozuke (Gurei-Oni for Braxas?)
60 Izumi
510

Hmm... If you replace Kaemon with two more squads of archers, you'll fill the hole.
