The Black Phoebe - My Spigot Sentinel

Image from Whatbird.com

Flittering from its perch, this small flycatcher plucks flying insects from the air and returns to the same spot to hunt again.

It was the Phoebe I discovered through my budding bird interest and backyard attentiveness. Before my watching hobby began, I'd never observed the bird. Didn't know it existed.

There's a water spigot in my yard. It stands on a galvanized pipe about 3 feet above the ground. It was here I first noticed this small, black and white bird.

When I'm in the backyard, it's nice to see the steady pile of bird droppings on the spigot handle - a sure sign my Phoebes are about and keeping the yard somewhat free of the flying insects.

the Black Phoebes hold a special place for me when I think of my early days of bird watching.
