Scaper of the Month: April 2019

Posted April 12th, 2019 at 06:16 PM by HS Codex

’Scaper of the Month
IamBatman
Author: quozl

This month, we have one of the founders of both C3G and C3V. Read on to learn more about who is really behind that famous cowl!

PROFILE

Who are you really?
I’m Batman.

How old are you?
36. Of course, that’s in comic book years.

What is your occupation?
College English lecturer by day. C3G legend by night.

What are other games you enjoy and why?
Gloomhaven and Sentinels of the Multiverse are probably my two all-timers.

It helps that they’re thematic, cooperative, and I have a good friend who’ll come over to my house and play both obsessively with me.

I love the easy-to-learn but deep-to-play mechanics of Sentinels as well as the superhero theme. Gloomhaven has such fun strategic elements and the RPG-level aspects keep me hungry for more.

What other interests do you have?
I tinker with game designs occasionally but never really finish anything, watch too much TV, follow the NBA and NFL increasingly casually as my teams are increasingly terrible, and spend lots of time with Mrs. Bats and Bat Toddler.

HEROSCAPE

When and how did you get into Heroscape?
I first played a copy my younger cousins had and got hooked enough to buy a bunch for myself. I was fairly poor at the time, being a grad student, so it was a slow but steady accumulation. I believe it was right around the time that Wave 1 was coming out that I started playing/buying my own stuff.

C3G: what got you started?
There’s an entire post about this somewhere ... Basically, I was an active member of the superhero custom community on here even before the Marvel set came out, then we started increasingly working together on projects like TNT and NM24 until a core group of us decided we wanted more and started C3G. I have the deep honor of having posted the idea first, but it was one we were all having.

C3V: what got you started?
Similar story. After the official game wrapped up there was a lot of discussion about how to continue the awesome legacy started by all the game designers. Some of the main C3G guys (Griffin, GreyOwl, and I, notably) got together and took ideas from the community and set up the C3V group. It’s grown and changed a ton from my days there and the current members have done an awesome job carrying on the torch long after I got burnt out on Valhallascape!

Favorite unit (official/custom):
Really tough one! I’d probably call it a tie between Anti-Monitor and Green Lantern. I know, I know: going with ones I led as designs shows my immense Bat-Ego, but the designing is more than half the fun for me. For these two I was really proud of how we were able to break new mechanical ground and really add to the game of Superheroscape in such clever and lasting ways.

Describe your favorite HeroScape moment.
Almost everything about being involved in C3G and just watching the community build and grow over time.

No, strike that: it was the time Markb97402, who was initially a founder of C3G and then got in an unfortunate car accident, then came back a long, long time later and posted, blown away by what the project had become. That was a pretty cool day.

I also really enjoyed the time Jim and I played a big April Fool’s Day prank on the boards by pretending I’d gotten banned and then I came on as BatmanIAm and trolled the whole board. It was pretty funny if you feel like digging it up.

So, less about Heroscape itself and more about Heroscapers, really.

Is there anything you would change about the game (unit, rule, mechanic, etc.)?
I would have skyscrapers. It would also be cool to have solo/co-op rules. The games I actually end up playing with friends are co-op, but that’s not really an option with Heroscape.

What is your favorite aspect of HeroScape?
I love how the system is flexible enough and interesting enough to allow for so much creativity and customization.

COMMUNITY

Favorite experience as part of main group:
Every time we get positive feedback on C3G or someone tells us how it’s given them hours of fun or brought them into the game it’s extremely rewarding and humbling.

Other groups: what got you started?
C3G and C3V are the only groups I’m really a part of. I guess Admin? It’s not because of tech skills, I’ll tell you that! It’s more they needed someone able to make subforums for C3G and they tagged me for the responsibility. I’m frankly shocked they were OK giving me so much power!

Can you tell us the story behind your title?
I said something about melting the cockles of my heart one time and I guess it struck Grungebob’s funny bone, because he gave me the title.

Can you tell us how you’ve gotten to where you are now in the community?
I think my post count says it all. I talk way too much!

What do you enjoy most about Heroscapers.com?
The other posters and the ability to collaborate and work together to hone our creative skills. I’ve never had as much fun creating something on my own. Plus y’all crack me up on a daily basis. I also feel like I’ve gained so many true friends from this community, and that’s a blessing.

Is there any member of Heroscapers.com you’d really like to play against?
Any of them! My Heroscape experience has been 99% solo-scaping. But probably someone who’d want to A) play Superheroscape, B) geek out about the theme as much as me, and C) remember the rules better than I do!

That C probably makes someone like Ronin the winner over other favorites (sorry, Spidey—B had your name all over it!).

LIE DETECTOR
Three Truths And A Lie
  • My mom wouldn’t let me play Dungeons and Dragons as a kid.
  • I’ve written two novels and published zero.
  • I was born in France.
  • I’ve met five members of Heroscapers in person.

LAST MONTH’S LIE (Lazy Orang)
  • The only time I’ve needed to go to the hospital since infancy was when I gesticulated too wildly during lunch time and accidentally stuck a fork in my eye.
  • I like wearing colourful, hippie clothes—long dresses, shawls, hats etc. My brother once referred to my appearance as being like an explosion in a paint factory.
  • We once had to get the fire brigade out because I’d left a paper bag of cakes in the gas oven (there was no room in the fridge), forgot about it, turned the oven on and the whole lot immolated. (Lie)
  • I once had to be prevented from leaving a shop as I’d somehow managed to start dragging a woman out with me by her hair after it had caught on my jewelry, and I hadn’t noticed. She was very nice about it.

THREE FUN FAVORITES

Favorite Movie Genre and Movie:
Superhero movies are my favorite. The Dark Knight is still king for me.

Favorite Book Genre and Book:
Sci-fi books are my favorite. Big Vonnegut fan but my favorite all time book right now is Feed by M.T. Anderson.

Favorite Song Genre and Song:
As I’ve aged I’ve gotten less into music. I’d say I like indy pop a decent bit. I’m between favorite songs.

CLOSING

What message do you have for the ’Scaper community?
I think this is an amazing community. How long was the official product in print? How long have we kept chugging along since? Heroscape will never die for me, and this community is the reason why.

Whom do you pick for the next ’Scaper of the Month?
I’d love to hear from someone whom I’m pretty sure has never been ’Scaper of the Month before: MrNobody!

Cheers,
Bats

Nice interview, Bats!

The lie has got to be that you've met 5 members in person. I'm guessing it's a smaller number like 3 or 4. That's what you get for living in Alabama, right?

Maybe someday 'Scaper of the Month will leave the C3G clique, but it looks like we'll have to wait a bit on that

I'm almost 100% certain the lie is meeting five HSers in person. Wasn't there a picture with all of the admins together? That's way more than five...

Great interview Bats; I enjoyed hearing more about you.

I'm guessing born in France.

EDIT: No hard feelings on losing out to Ronin, that's a tough race to win! Being mentioned was flattering.
