A Heroscaper's Wish List

This Christmas season leaves Heroscapers sad and dismayed. Many of us have already grabbed up Hasbro’s latest Heroscape offering – Swarm of the Marro, and now in the wake of the giving and getting frenzy that is Christmas, we are left without new Heroscape goodies to write Santa about.
I could take this opportunity to **** and moan about Hasbro dropping the ball by not offering something new and shiny for the hordes of Heroscape fans to bow down before in worshipful bliss, as they toss fistfuls of money at their newest miniature plastic idols. I could talk about how those Jungle Trees (which we now know are delayed to ’08, along with everything else we saw at GenCon) would just sell themselves in massive quantities. But neigh, I shall take the high road.
Instead of complaining about the lack of Heroscape under the tree, I’ve compiled a list of great games that any good Heroscaper would love to have. Parents, take special note that none of these games are as child-friendly as Heroscape, these recommendations are for players of the advanced rule set of Heroscape.

1. Last Night on Earth

In the sixth wave of Heroscape expansion figures, zombies were introduced to the world of Valhalla, and there was much rejoicing. Last Night on Earth is the single best zombie game ever created. Like Heroscape, this game oozes theme and flavor. You team up with other members of your small town to beat back the zombie infection plaguing your town. My team of fun-gineers has found that forcing players to say their character’s corny tagline, in character voice, every time they kill a zombie, increases the fun ten-fold.

2. Descent, Journeys in the Dark

I love a good bit of fantasy themeing. Decent has it in spades. One player plays as the overlord, trying his hardest to defeat the other players, which will all be playing as a brave hero or heroine. The heroes will explore dungeons room by room, coming across treasures and fiends alike. The level of complexity in this game is pretty steep, but that is part of its appeal.

3. Cut Throat Caverns

This is a game of backstabbing and cooperation, too much of either and you lose. Basically, it’s a role-playing/dungeon-crawler experience in a deck of cards.

4. Politico

Okay so, admittedly this game really doesn’t have much play value in common with Heroscape, but it was created by one of our own fanatical Heroscapers – justjohn. And the game is good, really really good. It’s lightning fast and makes for an excellent “pick-up” game.

5. Battlelore

If you’re one of those Heroscapers who only plays Heroscape with that one other person that will put up with you, Battlelore is perfect for you. It’s a 2-player game wherein you play an entire ARMY of fantasy characters.

6. Arkham Horror

Arkham Horror is a co-operative game. You and your buddies team up to beat the game. The theme is that of Lovecraft Horror. You run around town trying to close up monster leaking gates, as you beat the monstrosities back into the oblivion. This game, like Decent, has a pretty steep entry level. Lots of rules to look over and lots of different elements to the game.

7. Citadels

Citadels is another “screw your neighbor” type game. The game is all about bluffing and reading the other players. It is a card game so it is a relatively inexpensive gift.

8. Starcraft

Here is a game of massive proportions. If you’ve ever played the video game you know it is all about collecting resources and building a bigger and badder army than your opponents and then beating said opponents over the head with said army.

9. Nexus Ops

It’s sci-fi space battle! The game rewards aggressive players with the incorporation of victory points for winning battles and completing secret missions. There is an element of risk here in that you are trying to control areas of the board.

10. Robo Rally

Move your robots through a series of hazardous obstacles. Sounds boring right? Wrong! Its loads of chaotic fun for the whole family.

Well there you have it! Ten great games to give a Heroscaper.

I bought battle lore because of seeing this article on the front page. Trust me it is a very good purchase. If you search around (like I did) you can find it for 50 bucks as opposed to 70 from days of wonder.

There are several expansions that add new units and concepts and lots of lore. I would recomend getting the Call to Arms expansion first because it lets you generate your own armies on blank maps, so no worries if you have played through all the scenarios in the main game.

Overall a great, fast game with a whole lot of theme.

All valid, no doubt. But I was wondering if just maybe the guys and gals at wizard of the coast read this. I hope they do. And maybe they even pay attention to the sort of pricea some of us are paying for wave expansions that are no longer available.
Wave 2 seems to have arrived and is gone in under 60 days. Cars and houses aren't selling.. Heroscape is.
Example my minumum target 5 sets of common .. All of them
Who knows maybe we can have fun and jump start the economy.
