Scaper of the Month: May 2019

Posted May 11th, 2019 at 11:46 AM by HS Codex

’Scaper of the Month
MrNobody
Author: quozl

This month, we have someone new to Heroscapers (joined less than a year ago) but who has already made a big splash over at the C3G section of Heroscapers. Meet, Mr. Nobody!

PROFILE

Who are you really?
I’m Nobody and No-One, but my friends call me Troy.

How old are you?
A fresh young 20.

What is your occupation?
My last job was working at a Smoothie King, but right now I’m am unemployed, broke student.

What are other games you enjoy and why?
I’m not really much of a board gamer outside of Heroscape, because I’ve never really had opponents to play against. I used to play a lot of video games but I don’t really do that much either nowadays. Smash Ultimate is probably what I’ve been playing the most recently, ’cause my brother has been into it.

What other interests do you have?
I’m a sailor, but for me that mostly entails telling myself I should sail more and then never actually doing it. I read comics a lot when I was younger and have gotten back into them a bit since I got involved with the C3G community. I try to keep up with politics and the US legal system when I want to put myself in a bad mood. I’ve also recently stumbled into the hobby of collecting and selling vinyl records.

HEROSCAPE

When and how did you get into Heroscape?
I received Rise of the Valkyrie and Fortress of the Archkyrie as Christmas presents one year. (A bit hard to pinpoint the exact year, but it might have been 2006 or 2007?) I wasn’t interested in the game part, but the modular terrain and cool figures (Deathwalker 9k!) made for great imaginary battles.

Years later, me and a few friends discovered we all had the same game and decided to give it a try. I fell out of contact with all of them over the years, but my interest in Heroscape has remained.

C3G: what got you started?
I first tried C3G in the hype build-up for the Fantastic Four Master Set. I was hooked pretty much instantly. I actually had a different account way back then. (Scandalous, I know!) I tried my hand at making horribly unbalanced customs, did some terrible playtests for C3G, and was generally a nuisance. I eventually stopped posting, but I continued to follow the releases from both C3G and C3V and still played a game every now and then.

The innovation of online ’Scape got me back in the game hardcore. Around 2017 I started playing online games against myself. It was nice because I could do it even when I wasn’t home and didn’t require a bulky map set up in my room. I had a rules question about a C3G unit I wanted answered, so I tried logging into my old account only to find it had been more-or-less deactivated. I made the MrNobody account so I could try to get my old account unlocked, but when I was given the chance I decided I’d rather stick with this new one. The C3G crew talked me into joining their club, and they’ve been regretting it ever since!

Favorite unit (official/custom):
Okay I’m going to cheat a bit here. I mainly play C3G designs, so that narrows my choices a bit to ... over 800 designs. So instead of picking 1 favorite (probably Cap or Jason, for the record), I’ve chosen 8 units that I always have a blast playing that I feel don’t get talked about enough.
  • Cosmic Boy – Anyone who knows me knows I’m a huge fan of the Legion of Super-Heroes, and I love how they play in C3G. Cos is a flexible faction leader, but if you’re hot on the D20, him and his defensive power can decimate an enemy army all alone. In my opinion, he’s the most underrated unit in C3G.
  • Deathbird – She’s simple, but she works. Her one power gives her a unique and fun gimmick that pairs great with attack boosters, especially Star-Lord.
  • Hand Mystics – A newer release, but you can make Hulk a ninja. What else needs to be said?
  • Havok – He gets overlooked a bit for other generalist leaders like Star-Lord and Captain America, but Havok is a fun and strategic figure. I never feel like I’m smart enough to get full effectiveness out of him, but still really like him.
  • Dark Judges – Yep, all 4 of them. A fun little faction with each member bringing something unique and inventive to the table.
  • Kree Scout – To quote my grandpa, “You get two stray cats, next thing you know they start breeding and you got a hundred cats.” Once you get one Kree Scout into position, you can bring the whole Kree Empire to them in a few turns. It’s a cool little start to what is blossoming into a neat faction.
  • Saturn Girl – Hardly the most competitive unit, but she has enough unique tricks up her sleeve that I always find her fun to play.
  • Uncle Sam – He’s quirky but there are some really fun builds you can do with him and Cap.

The 10th anniversary release also contains some new favorites for me. At the time of me writing this, it hasn’t seen release, but it should by the time you’re seeing this. The new Guardians of the Galaxy, the Inhumans, and Thanos are all units I’ve played and really, really enjoyed.

Describe your favorite HeroScape moment.
It has to be a toss up between any of the few occasions I’ve convinced friends or family to play the game with me. It gets lonely constantly solo-scaping.

Is there anything you would change about the game (unit, rule, mechanic, etc.)?
I know I’m parroting several other interviewees, but I’d probably just try to add more clarity where possible without changing the actual ruleset any. Things like clarifying player turns vs. figure turns and other simple things that plague anyone who really tries to get into the nitty-gritty of mechanics.

What is your favorite aspect of HeroScape?
Outside of the community? The simplicity. I’m honestly not much of a board gamer, and a big reason for this is that I don’t enjoy flipping through big rulebooks every time I play. With Heroscape, the rules are easy to remember and also lend themselves to a lot of customization. From my view, that ease of custom creation is the main element in what has kept this community afloat for so many years after cancellation.

COMMUNITY

Favorite experience as part of C3G:
Seeing the card for the Daleks was a really surreal experience for me. It was something I had created ... but it looked like a C3G card ... and that’s because it was! It may sound stupid, I know, but the whole thing just felt unreal.

Can you tell us the story behind your username?
My username is something I’ve used in a few different places online. I stole it from a Doom Patrol comic and a Doctor Who EU villain named Nobody No-One. I think it’s the right mix between cool and humble, because I really am just a nobody. Way less self-aggrandizing than naming yourself after Batman or a masterless samurai or something like that.

Can you tell us the story behind your title?
It’s a pretty simple pun. Nobody = no body = just a head. Is that technically a pun or just a play on words? I can never remember.

Can you tell us how you’ve gotten to where you are now in the community?
By constantly being around, mainly. That, and boyish enthusiasm. I usually find those 2 qualities can counteract my general lack of talent, charm, and competence.

What do you enjoy most about Heroscapers.com?
How friendly and genuine everyone is. This really is the kindest community I’ve ever found online, or even in general.

Is there any member of Heroscapers.com you’d really like to play against?
All of them?

LIE DETECTOR
Three Truths And A Lie
  • I’ve never seen the Mr. Nobody film with Jared Leto.
  • At the time of writing this, I’ve currently gone 3 days straight eating nothing but Kraft Mac & Cheese.
  • Despite living in Georgia my whole life, I despise sweet tea.
  • Every roommate I’ve ever lived with (outside of my family) was born outside of the United States.

Last month’s lie:
  • My mom wouldn’t let me play Dungeons and Dragons as a kid.
  • I’ve written two novels and published zero.
  • I was born in France.
  • I’ve met five members of Heroscapers in person.

THREE FUN FAVORITES

Favorite Movie Genre and Movie:
For genre, I’d go with action/adventure. Seeing a fictional character on the screen performing all sorts of crazy feats always gets me in the mood to go out there and improve myself in some way. As for my favorite movie, that would be Ghostbusters. Every October I have a tradition of watching it as many times as possible, usually as background noise while I’m doing something else. My record was set in October 2015 with 21 viewings, as well as 3 viewing of Ghostbusters 2.

Favorite Book Genre and Book:
Does Doctor Who count as a genre? That counts for most of my reading. My favorite is probably Vampire Science, written by Kate Orman and Joathan Blum. I’m currently reading a (non-Who) book, House of Leaves, that might just overtake the favorite slot by the time I finish.

Favorite Song Genre and Song:
I go through phases of being really into one genre or another. Right now I’m listening to a lot of Beatles and They Might Be Giants (so ... rock and alt-rock if you want to put labels on it?) but at the start of the year I went through a big classic punk phase. As for an all-time favorite song, it would probably be “Ashes to Ashes” by David Bowie.

CLOSING

What message do you have for the ’Scaper community?
Just keep doing your thing, guys. It seems to be working.

Whom do you pick for the next ’Scaper of the Month?
I know it’s a bit of a joke that all the C3G guys pick each other ... but I barely know anybody else so I’m going to pass the buck to LordVenoc.

Nice interview! Didn't disappoint.
Looking forward to LV!
For the lie, I'm going with the one about the roommates. The others strike me as too true.
There's a birdhouse in my soul!

Great interview.
Your Doctor Who knowledge is even more impressive to me considering your youth.

Collecting vinyl records, nice.
You seem like a really interesting chap, Odysseus! (I like my nickname for you even more now I know your name is Troy, nicely ironic. ).
