My Life Did Not Flash before My Eyes

Posted December 4th, 2010 at 04:02 AM by CheddarLimbo
I am not an overly dramatic person by nature, but I think I came very close to dying tonight.

I was driving home from a night of gaming around 1:40 or so. I was more or less on auto-pilot thinking about this game design I have kicking around in my head.

I was in the far-left lane of I-30, a 3 lane highway coming out of Dallas. It was more or less empty compared to the normal traffic of the day. So I'm plugging along and suddenly, the car in front of me quickly jerked to the right - revealing an oncoming set of headlights.

I do not remember making conscious, or active decisions for the next ten seconds. I flew to the right to get out of the car's way, and lost control of the car. I began to skid sideways, and ended up rotating about 180° - to find myself facing an on-coming semi truck.

That truck also swerved to his right, and I had just enough time to whip my car back around in the correct direction and get to the side of the road.

I called 911, but I don't even remember what I said aside from telling them my location and that a car was going Westbound on the Eastbound highway. I do know I was shaking like crazy.

I don't know that I would have actually died if I'd been in a head on collision at 60+ mph...I did have my seat belt on. But still, I cannot help thinking I got away with something tonight.

Wow, I'm glad you're alright. Head on collision at 60 mph, seatbelt or not, is not a situation you'd want to be in. Unfortunately, we are all guilty of day dreaming at the wheel from time to time.

Wow. That would be scary. Then where would we get our secret santa from?

But seriously, that is scary. That is not a situation want to be in when I have a license.

Thanks guys! I wrote this last night when I was still pretty freaked out. I feel much better about it now, but it was still crazy. Nothing on the web this morning about any accidents, so I'm hoping the person was stopped last night without incident.

Glad to hear you're all right, CheddarLimbo. Just think, you'll never watch Planes, Trains and Automobiles the same way again.

Hmmm...interesting. Very interesting.

Seems DrLivingston left my house really late last night and was very tired. He seems like he's the crazy enough sort to do that.

Just kidding. Glad you're okay, CL.

And I'd be willing to be it was probably some drunk jack-A that got into the HOV lane and somehow ended up on the wrong side of the freeway when the HOV was supposed to be running the other way. I never will understand why that thing runs both ways - on the same piece of road - in certain sections of the freeway.

Anyway, glad you're okay, man.

Well, I checked around and didn't find any news of a head-on collision over the weekend, so here's hoping the jackass was able to get off the road before he manslaughter'd someone!

I know its been a long time but I just wanted to express my positive sentiments to you. I am very happy you and everyone else is OK. Life is fragile and we will never know how close we all have come to the end. Strange how every little decision can have a profound effect on life. It is best to enjoy each and every day. 'Scape on, peace...
