Good happy holidays

Posted January 17th, 2015 at 03:52 PM by Sylvano the Wasabus
Usually you wish others happy holidays- and I did wish that everyone had them- but I was far too busy to do it before the holidays. My Holidays were happy and busy, full of good things. It was very nice.

We got quite a few scape games in, which was excellent, as we seem to have been too busy for a bit to fit many in. I won three in a row which is unusual for me. (I lost last night so my streak is broken)

The most memorable was Romans facing marauding orcs. My middle son had been taunting me about how he was going to clean my clock and how Romans are lunch for orcs. I admit he rattled me.

The scenario was scouting with capture the flag tagging rules- basically you have to visit five selected hexes on a big board and you must be unengaged when you visit. The first player to get all five wins. Well I didn’t’ think I could outrun or outmanoeuvre those disengaging orcs, so I didn’t try. I just plunked my whole army down on one of the hexes...

hang the new guy

Hang the new guy

There’s a new guy here at work. We really needed another person to help with the work and he’s most welcome.

I liked him immediately, though he’s young enough to be my son. He wears his hair in a small pony tail and comes to work on a skateboard. He’s in his twenties, competent and polite but I admit he does seem a little young. It’s not the skateboard, which I think is funny, or the pony tail – who really cares- but it’s the fact that he uses his mother’s email. That seems a little strange to me. I’m a bit Quasatch- i have techno rage- but even I accept email. Is it a warning sign?

This job is a crazy job and it honestly takes people at least a year to get their footing. A big part of it is because management is a disorganized disaster. Imagine a semi truck full of marbles crashing and all the marbles rolling onto the highway, thousands and thousands of them. Now imagine one legged ambulance attendants hopping through...

Treasure

Posted December 11th, 2014 at 02:53 PM by Sylvano the Wasabus
We found a treasure map.

When i was in grade school, my parents gave a pad of paper to draw on. Classes bored me and it was considered a good distraction for a busy mind. I drew pictures, made maps, wrote picture books and generally had a great time. When i think back at those grade school years mostly i remember drawing and creating.

I was telling the above at dinner t’other night when my eight year old got up and went to his room. He returned with three books- 80 pages each. He was in grade two last year and his teacher had given him the books, one at a time, so that he could draw and keep busy without being a distraction to other kids. Just like me. We didn’t even know his teacher had done it.

My son flipped through the pages of the books, remembering the pictures he’d drawn last year. When I was his age i only drew dogs walking on two legs dressed as people. They became characters in stories and adventures. My son mostly draws...

Bad Number Jokes

Posted December 3rd, 2014 at 12:19 PM by Sylvano the Wasabus
My kids and I have recently gone through a period of bad number jokes. We made up a bunch, and most of them were pretty awful.

My younger son likes puns, so he tried to go that route. One of the best parts I have to admit was making jokes that my youngest son, only 7, would laugh at. You could see him picturing the numbers in his head and then he’d cackle. You can’t put a number value on that.

Some of the jokes were over his head- as you will see- so he made us explain them to him. Here’s the ones I can remember:

This joke was our inspiration- it’s an old one: Why was 8 afraid of 7? Because 7 ate 9. (ate sounding like 8 )

What did 6 say to 4? I am too better than you.

What did 8 say to 18? Who’s the skinny guy?

What did 11 say to the equals sign? Are you flying?

What did 1 say to 100? Nice wheels.

What did the number 8 say to the letter B? Did you walk...

One Metal Pole

Posted November 26th, 2014 at 11:21 AM by Sylvano the Wasabus
A friend of mine almost died and was saved by his arch enemy.

My friend, I’ll call him Keith, came from an immigrant family. He was born here but his parents came from the former Yugoslavia. His parents opened a restaurant and made it their life’s work. They did well enough to give each kid a restaurant when they retired- they’d spread to three locations.

I thought Keith’s restaurant had a good location. It jutted out into the lake on a narrow spit of land by a very popular beach. It’s a summer holiday place- beautiful lake, swimming, sailing, sometimes even surfing.

But Keith always had a struggle making ends meet. He tried all sorts of things- new menus, new decor- that’s how I met him. I was working for a company doing some work on the building. It really was a beautiful location- lots of windows with gorgeous lake views. I have to admit I never ate there, but their food was probably just fine.

Keith believed...
