Fan Fiction Spotlight
The River That Was Red, by The Grim Reaper’s Friend

Since I have ten fan fiction stories of my own, I figured it was only a matter of time before I had to spotlight one of them. That time has come, and I’ve chosen one which I personally believe to be my best: “The River That Was Red.”

I’ve seen a lot of fan fiction start off strong, only to slow down and eventually stop altogether. This has led me to wonder why. Certainly there are several contributing factors, chief among them being a lack of planning ahead. But there are other culprits, such as a lack of tension, not enough readers, or simply a lack of interest on the author’s part.

“Red,” as I call it, didn’t have this lack of interest, and I believe that’s why it was completed, and why I like how it turned out so much. “Red” was inspired by a lot of things, and each of those things contributed to my desire to write it.

“Red” first came to me due to an unnamed song. That song gave me ideas for a very early version of “Red,” and one which ultimately never saw the light of day. That early version, however, was packed full of drive, which meant the idea stayed with me. It grew and expanded, but there was no real story to go along with the inspiration I had found.

I was studying WWI at the time, and what would eventually become “Red” first took shape while I was reading an excellent book: Testament of Youth. The book is about a nurse in Britain during WWI, and, despite being more of a biography than anything else (it is nonfiction), the writing was so well done and so packed with passion that I was transported to that time and place. I will never forget that book.

The final part of what made “Red” come together came from HeroScape. I had always wanted to write a tale about the kyrie, from the start of the war to the end. I dove into the lore and found things which finally started to give the story shape. Events fell into place.

Inspired by a song, fueled by a powerful book, and given substance by HeroScape, “The River That Was Red,” in my opinion, turned out quite well. I hope that if you give it a look, you’ll be able to say the same.

Author Biography (Currently Active)

Well this is something I hadn’t anticipated: writing a biography on myself. Difficult to do, but I’ll give it a try.

A lot of things had to fall into place for me to be where I am now. I never expected to own or play any HeroScape, but it got on my radar through a friend, and then arrived in the form of a birthday gift. I never expected to be on HeroScapers, but the same friend told me how great it was, and I joined on a whim. I never expected to be anything on the site (and indeed I wasn’t for several years) but then I found the fan fiction forum. I never expected to be any good at writing, but it turned out people liked what I was doing. I never expected to start serious work on writing, but it happened when I picked up a random book on writing. And I certainly never expected to be part of (much less in charge of) the Codex, but they asked to feature some of my fan fiction, I got in, and was an editor before too long. And here we are.

I believe that the key to good writing, whether it be fiction or nonfiction, is passion. Interest. A drive, not just to write, but to write about something. To say something. That’s what gives you the drive to write, and to keep writing. Without that passion, writing is just a hobby. It’s just something you do for fun.

I’ve tried to incorporate that passion into all of my fan fiction. When I started developing what I write, I found that passion was called “theme.” Theme has become the basis for the way I write, and it still is. I develop everything off of theme, including the characters, the plot, and the very structure of the novel itself. Theme has led me to where I am now, and I would be nowhere without it.

Write with passion. Write with interest.

Until next time, this is TGRF, signing off.
