The Death of Heroscape?

Wizards of the Coast announced today that it will be discontinuing the Heroscape line.

They've sited a desire to focus on their core brands as the reason. I know, shocking right? Wizards doesn't want to branch out from Magic and D&D?! Since when? For those of you who aren't well-versed in the history of Wizards of the Coast and hobby game publishing, that was sarcasm. Wizards has had a notoriously difficult time branching out from their core brands of D&D and Magic the Gathering. Nowhere is that more evident than their handling of the Heroscape brand. Rather than allow Heroscape to grow based on the brand it had established for itself, they chose to re-brand the product line to fit into D&D. Many rock-solid, even fanatical, Heroscape fans saw that as a jumping off point. Is that why the brand didn't work at Wizards? Maybe, maybe not. It doesn't change anything for me to get overly speculative on the matter, but there it is. I've pointed out the Elephant in the...

Final D3 Preview: National Heroscape Day

I just got home from the New England NHSD event. Across the country today players sat down across the table to roll some dice together. If your local NHSD event was anything like mine, you came away with a bunch of fun stories, and hopefully a few new rivals!

I'm excited to announce that WotC gave us permission to release the preview set of D3 to some lucky participants on National Heroscape Day. So a few lucky players in New England, Texas, and Iowa walked away from the events with some very exclusive prizes!

At each of those 3 events today we revealed one final figure, and for those of you not attending, here they are!

Moltenclaw:

Moltenclaw might look like just a short range Mimring at first. However, once you play on a battlefield with him, you'll realize he completely changes the way your opponent thinks about placement!

Heroscape D3 Preview Week 5

Posted October 13th, 2010 at 11:12 AM by truth
Updated October 13th, 2010 at 02:42 PM by truth
And so we have arrived, to the final week of D3 previews! Some of you may notice, while this is our last Preview Wednesday for D3, we still have 3 Army Cards to reveal.

The final 3 figures have been shipped to 3 National Heroscape Day events. The Ice Troll Berserker will be revealed at the New England event, Moltenclaw will be revealed at Tree Town Open VI, and Master of the Hunt will be revealed at Hexes in Texas. I’ll post the article for those figures once I return from the New England event Saturday night.

But today, we’re going to cover the other 3 remaining Army Cards. The Mezzodemon Warmongers, The Death Chasers of Thesk, and Evar Scarcarver

Mezzodemon Warmongers:

The Mezzodemons are another 2 unit common squad for D&D Scape. Like the Death Knights of Valkrill they have their own unique twist that makes them deadly on the battlefield....

Heroscape D3 Week 4 Preview: Ogre Pulverizer and Horned Sku

Welcome back to preview Wednesdays!

Today, we’re going to cover 2 of the new Army Cards. The Ogre Pulverizer and the Horned Skull Brutes.

Ogre Pulverizer:

The Ogre Pulverizer is Utgar’s latest Uncommon Hero. We designed him as another big dumb brute, just like the Ogre Warhulk in D2. He’s able to hit multiple figures per turn, but he’s so obsessed with swinging his tree trunk around, that he’s not paying attention to any potential countering attacks.

Horned Skull Brutes:

Wave D3 Week 3, Second Preview: Siege

Posted September 30th, 2010 at 01:42 AM by truth

Siege began like most Warforged with Warforged Resolve, and some other versions of typical Warforged or Juggernaut powers. However we eventually we felt like he needed more mmph. Colby designed a really exciting new mechanic for Evar Scarcarver, and he found a great way to mimic that mechanic in a different way with Siege.

Siege is great at holding an area, or as your last man standing on the battlefield. With his Crag of Steel, he's able to stand his ground and withstand a volley of attacks, but don't get too close. While he may look stoic in that stance, he's able to lash out at all those around him.

He's not a linchpin to build an Army around, but he is a great addition to any Army. Especially those with classic glyphs or an area you need to control on...
