My Strategy Addiction

Posted August 31st, 2008 at 07:52 PM by Einar Gen.
Ever since I was 6, I've been addicted to strategy. At age 6, my granddad taught me how to play chess, and I was hooked. A Star Wars and L.O.T.R. fan, I played games like "Epic duels", and the Lord of the Rings board game. For video games, I played "Fire Emblem" and "Advance Wars". Now comes the one problem with these games. Although great games, they didn't allow you to field leaders as well as troops. Fire Emblem focuses on fighting armies with a group of characters, while Advance wars let you field only troops. (Although the new Adavance wars does let you field your C.O. now...) So when I saw Heroscape, it attracted my attention right away. Troops AND characters?!?!? AWESOME! Mimring and the vikings attracted me to the game most...(Not to mention it's the Battle of ALL TIME... I love history.) That's what happens after too much L.O.T.R. and Fire Emblem. I started to put money away towards the set, but, as always, kids can't stop themselves from spending, even if just a little. Then, my next birthday, my uncle gave me the master set. I nearly fainted.(Well, not really...) It just so happened to come with the E.O.V. as well. And that began my Heroscape addiction. Still addicted to strategy, I'm now playing "Civilization" and "The Settlers: Rise of an Empire". And, of course, Heroscape, The battle of All Time.

Anyway, thanks for reading!

I consider Fire Emblem to be the best game franchise of all time. Mario and Zeldra are close too, but Fire emblem is just amazing.
  1. The Storyline is deep, it twists, and it is done beutifully. I can beleive a character. My only wish is that they had more diolauges for sub character, and that they bring back support conversations.
  2. It is frickin hard. To get through the game on a higher level of dificulty without losing a character requires many many re-starts. Not to mention if you do let them die you loose strength and things get harder.
  3. There are so many secret character to coerce to you. In FE2:SS, I didn't even know Cormag could be recruited, and I slew him easily. In Eirika's story, I beet the level so fast he never even showed up. But thhat's what I get for choosing not to use the strategy guids for once. (I have used the guide to the first, the second after one non guided run through, the third, but not the fourth.)
  4. It's got replay value up the wazoo. You could play it 5 times (or in my case I've played the first one...9-11 times, I lost count) and not have things be the same.

Yes... Yes you do. Actually, it takes ages. It's sort of like a puzzle: It's divided into one, two, and three. The board is put together with interlocking pieces (Sound familiar?) which have rings on certain spaces. Each ring represents a certain event in the movie. (They all connect, so you can have all the movies be one big game) Each character can be moved by any player, and you score points depending on your choices and rolls.

And Einar's puppy: Great to see another fan on the site! I've played F.E. countless times, and one of the things I love most are how hints are dropped during the dialog as to who can talk to who. For Example:

Thug:Hey! You! The new dog! Get out here and earn your money!

Guy: Right, right, wouldn't wanna get fired on my first day... 'Course, would've been best not to get involved with this ugly bunch in the first place... Gotta eat though. If I think about the time I passed out in Caelin... Phew. Nothing funny about that. If it weren't for that man... what was his name? Matthew?

See? Add that to great gameplay and you've got yourself a killer game.

Hector's my favorite lord, Guy and Sain are my favorite soldiers in number 1. Number 2, favorite lord is Ephraim, soldiers are... Seth, and... Cormag or Joshua... Or maybe Duessel... can't decide. Yours?

I only have a DS, so no 3 or 4 for me... By the way: Try as I might, there are four units I can't find in number 1. Surprising, as I've played the game 100 times... These are the units: Blue haired cavalier, warrior, Falcoknight, girl sword master. Help?
