’Scaper of the Month
Brewster
Author: Ninja Status

PROFILE

Who are you really?

My name is Bryan Bonar.

How old are you?

I'm 28.

What is your occupation?

I’m a patient care assistant in the OR at Fort Hamilton Hospital. Essentially, my job is to help surgery and anaesthesia staff with patients, clean rooms after surgery, and make sure all surgical and anaesthesia supplies are stocked.

What’s the story behind your username?

At the time, I played a lot of Animal Crossing, and I always admired Brewster. He was a cool bartender, made a mean cup of coffee, and had a sweet mustache. What’s not to love?

What are other games you enjoy and why?

These days I play a lot of Magic: the Gathering, I picked it up after Heroscape was discontinued and have had a growing collection since. I enjoy the creative aspect of deckbuilding (much like brewing armies in ’Scape) and I also love the strategic element.

What other interests do you have?

I am a digital artist and love to illustrate cool fantasy characters. Right now it’s just a side gig, but if I could do it full time that would be a dream come true.

HEROSCAPE

When and how did you get into Heroscape?

I don’t remember exactly how I got into ’Scape; I believe for a birthday or Christmas some time in 2005 my mother got me the RoTV master set, and my cousin’s mother got him one, too, and we loved to combine our sets for epic games. I loved the game so much I basically used every bit of my allowance on booster packs and every Christmas and birthday, ’Scape was all I wanted for the next 4 years, so fortunately by the time the game was discontinued, I almost had at least one of everything.

Favorite unit (official/custom):

Such a hard question! There are so many to love, and I always try to rotate my armies so I play a good variety, but I have to say the ultimate figure for me is the infamous Major Q9!

Describe your favorite HeroScape moment.

Halloween of 2009: I did a game with my best friend on an epic map designed to be “Castle Esenwein.” It was one of the most fun adventure style games I’ve ever played and the most aesthetically pleasing map I have ever built. The adventure is chronicled in a thread in the Battle Reports forum.

Is there anything you would change about the game (unit, rule, mechanic, etc.)?

I honestly sometimes wish dice were simply 3 skulls and 3 shields, sometimes defending seems like a lost cause and you’re always praying for probability to swing in your unlikely favor. But most of all I wish Sonlen was a wizard!! Argh!

What is your favorite aspect of Heroscape?

Building the map. I have always been wowed by the GenCon displays of old and the epic maps designed by the awesome members of the Heroscapers community.

COMMUNITY

Can you tell us how you’ve gotten to where you are now in the community?

About a year ago I figured, I have a car ... why not travel to play ’Scape? I found out outforblood had a nice little group of ’Scapers about an hour from me and I’ve been playing with them biweekly since! The pandemic situation has hindered play a bit, but I think the Dayton crew will come out strong and in full force when everything blows over. If you’re in the KY/OH/IN/MI area, get in contact with myself or outforblood and we will get you on our Facebook page!

What do you enjoy most about Heroscapers.com?

The “Books of” and other resources like that. Makes playing and learning the game so much easier.

What is one customs/community project you’ve stuck with through your time here?

National HeroScape Day is still a time-honored tradition!

Is there any member of Heroscapers.com you’d really like to play against?

There are two: I’d love to play an epic game against Dr. Weirdscaper because I love huge maps, and I’d like to play against Matthias Maccabeus because Knights of Weston are probably my favorite competitive unit and I want to go against the master!!

CLOSING

What message do you have for the ’Scaper community?

’Scape hard or go home! But, seriously: look around on here and Facebook for ’Scapers in your area! I truly believe this game is too good to ever die out.

Whom do you pick for the next ’Scaper of the Month?

Father Of Julian: he’s a swell guy and a great player.
