I'm Just Not That Into Her

Why I Hate Raelin

Now it may supprise some people to know that I had owned my copy of Rise of the Valkyrie for nearly two years before I ever used Raelin. I came to Heroscape after playing Magic for a long time (I had been playing Legacy format tournaments back when the format was still called 1.5), and in Magic (generally speaking) cards that do something to your oppenent to help you win are better than cards that just protect your stuff. So when I first got a look at her card, I knew there were better things I could to with 80pts.

Flash forward a year or so, and I get a call from a friend that I hadn't seen in a couple years. We talk, and eventually he says, "I'm playing this awsome new game. It's called Heroscape . . . ." So we get together and play some gamesj and he tells me about the website. I come on and lurk for about a year, and I see alot of love (and hate) for Raelin.

So eventually I try her out with some Tagawa Samurai Archers. She helped a bit, though I didn't get a single counterstrike until after she died, and I start occasionally working her into army builds. When it comes down to actually playing these armies, it seems like I'm always trying to move out of Raelin's aura. I don't think this is just a matter of bad Raelin placement, which admitedly it is sometimes, but more a matter of gereral play style.

I like my guys spread out. When you're all clustered-up it just makes it easier for your oppent to get to you, and Raelin doesn't support the kinds of tactics that lend themselves to this play style. She's a bit like that mechanism that makes your seatbelt lock when you're apllying the brakes. Sure it may save your life, but it has an uncanny nack of locking you back in your seat when you need to lean forward a bit.

I hate Raelin. I don't think she's bad for the game, and she may be a little undercosted, but mostly she just doesn't suit me. I like my guys mobile and she just doesn't accomodate that.

Well met!

You sound like an offensive type of guy. When assaulting units in a good defensive position, Raelin can make all the difference, especially if you use Deathreavers and/or Warriors of Ashra, conveniently located in a Wave 10 near you.

Yeah, I've heard I can be pretty offensive .

Anyway, I really don't see the point in combining Raelin and rats. If I have a screen that's already tougher than nails, what do I need RaeRae for? Though I've never considered combining her with WoA, and while it does help make up for their biggest weakness (getting shot while they're closing) I'm still sceptical with regards to how much she'd help. I just don't much like the way she plays (and most other non-bonding, aura-based, cheerleaders for that matter. Except Laglor, he's the shizzle-to-the-dizzle.)

Sounds like you have the mindset towards Raelin that I do. There just seems to be much more you can do with those 80 points.

Nice breakdown and analysis.

Yeah, sometimes I have issues with Raelin as well. I don't usually find myself including her in army builds unless I have figures like Syvaris (who I surround with units like samurai). Main reason I draft Raelin with figures like that is because I know that these units:

A. need protecting, and most importantly
B. don't need to move around much at all

But a lot of times I find myself drafting Finn instead of Raelin just so I can get those extra attack dice because those fit my play style a little more. Even if I do the Syvaris thing I draft Finn far more often than Raelin.

edit: I also find that the map has a lot to do with it as well. More often than not the map lends itself to offensive gameplay, or the general strategy that I form centers more around being agressive than waiting.

Just to let you know Warlord Alpha,

Finn can't help Syvaris unless he is dead.
While he is alive, Finn can only help range 1 units.
I may have misunderstood you and you very well may know this already. Thought I'd give a heads-up

I know, I usually us Finn as a glyph grabber until he dies.

Sometimes my opponent has reservations about killing Finn, rightfully so, and it gives me a few extra turns with the glyph.

It is really too bad that he can only help range 1 units. But even so, he still has uses while alive. Plus when he is dead it doesn't matter. Sometimes his spirit goes on the Marro Warriors or something else like the Krav that could be made more efficient at killing with his spirit.

I absolutely love Raelin. My play style all depends on the army I'm using. Sometimes my guys group together on height, and other times they rush recklessly in like berserkers. But one of my favorite squads is the 10th regiment. Raelin takes their fragile defense and turns them into an unstoppable killing machine. One of many reasons...

Bacon is sometimes nice and crispy, though you can still chew it a bit. Other times it is soft and gross. Other times it's as brittle as class, and you really don't taste it.

In other words, Raelin's hit-or-miss. In some armies, and on some maps I absolutely love her. Other times she doesn't do enough. I'm really not a fan of using her with melee of any kind, though I do like her with some range units.

Xn F M, you said it. I've never understood the Raelin craze.

Just an anchor with a target on her chest.
