Thormun's Journal - The Swarm of the Marro Scenarios

There have been some recent updates to Thormun's Journal. These recent entries directly reflect the events played out in the scenarios that are included in the Swarm of the Marro Master Set.

Thormun's Journal has taken on a far more mature tone. I wrote these current entries back during a time when the game was still at Hasbro and I fully expected to have to tone them down in a second draft. You see, Craig and I had an ongoing deal, I would write the stories raw, I would write them the way I thought they should be told and he would just reel me back in where he thought I had gone too far for Hasbro's younger audience. However, as many of you know, the game has moved hands to Wizards of the Coast where Hasbro felt the game could be better marketed toward the hobby gamers (that would be us, we are mostly an older demographic here), and as a result I get away with things like this:

Quote:
My boot splashes into standing water and is sucked downward by the spluttering mud. The water is murky, an awful shade of rancid-green with a smell to match. I glance down at my slowly sinking foot and my eye catches on a floating object bumping itself up against my leg. Some itch in the back of my brain has me stoop over to make a closer inspection. I lift it slightly out of the water, the clinging algae drips away, and then I drop it in gut-wrenching horror. A bloated arm lies there in the dim pool, lurid, and streaked with blue veins. I take a step backwards and look over the water’s surface. More of the same morbid bits bob their way around the stagnant puddle. The dead surround us, left here to rot in the mire.

Before I can even begin to react to what I’m seeing, a new terror seizes me. I stand transfixed, as a pale arm reaches itself up out of the slime. Raelin screams. Raelin, who is always unmoved in the face of battle, always brave, always bold, is now gripped with fear. A dripping torso pulls itself out of the water. Then another body emerges, and another. It is as if the dead rise from their slumber to rejoin the living. But these are not the faces of the dead. These macabre faces belong to the marro. They’ve hidden themselves among the corpses of their previous victims, laying in wait to ambush us.
On a side note, I am a little disappointed that these first drafts are no longer being run through an editor. I'll be trying to submit some changes to clean up some of these already posted entries. Chris Schubach (copy editor) at Hasbro was too good to me, I miss her.

I mean Snowman the Tactitioner, not Onacara. There NEEDS to be something other than manufactured plastic in this amazing game. Minatures are good for now, but in afew years someone will get tired.

But what about the movie idea?

I like the change in tone. As a heavy follower of the Thormon's Journal concept I think the change to a slightly more exciting, albeit darker, tone makes the story seem more real.

I also like how, whether by accident or design, this change in tone corresponds with the change from Thormun righting the story to Sgt. Drake. I like this because Thormun seems like the kind of person to right softly, but Drake, being a soldier, would probably be a little more literal in his righting.

They do not need a video game a movie a cartoon nothing...if you get bored with it then you really do not have the attention span to play it in the first place.

Onacara, I think you are right! I am not bored with it at all, nor do I foresee being bored with Herosape ever. However, the idea of imediate gratification from a video game (i.e. senerios, maps, combat...) takes away from the whole idea of the game. Humans vs. Humans and the limitless battles that brings. It seems that I was tempted by that, but worry not! I will never take part in talk of a video game or movie ever again.

I not really bored either, and I probably never will be, but there are some aspects of battle that can't really be brought out in a board game. It's not much to lose though, since Heroscape is still wonderful enough in the world of miniatures board games, and most of those aspects of battle aren't too important, either. Besides, I really ment the videogame to be another way to play with the original concept, and not to be a totally seperate version of Heroscape.

Way to step it up Truth. Those new entries are great. You're quite a strong writer. Your phrasing is tight, especially in the action sequences, which can be hard to pace. I can't wait to hear more.

Sorry to hear about you losing your editor; it's always helpful to have a second pair of critical eyes. I know I'm new here and don't really know any of you guys yet, but I would be willing to offer my editing services if you need. I've got a BA in English and I've done editing work outside of the classroom as well, so I've got plenty of experience.

MUSHT. HAFF. VIDEOGAMESHH.

Anyways, awesome entries! One thing I've noticed has really change dis the switch to a more action-based theme, instead of Thormun travelling and being a diplomat.
