Bad Hunting

Posted July 7th, 2010 at 08:41 PM by Sylvano the Wasabus
Our most common game right now is a 2 on 2, 250 points per person.

My 16-year-old daughter has become our regular fourth player and we are delighted.

She has now started making her own customs (my 12 year old son says it means she’s hooked too). She’s reading Tolkien right now and her customs are Mirkwood elves- archers and pole arm fighters with two heroes that synergize with the Mirkwood patrols.

My sons are currently obsessed with goblins (12 year old son) and dwarves (9 year old son). I’m still stuck on archers.

It was a very natural game- everyone’s obsessions.

My two sons teamed together, goblins and dwarves, and joked that we would have good hunting against them, since both factions are regarded as weak. The goblins rely on numbers rather than strength, and the dwarves are tough but soooo slow- in our game they have a move of only three.

My daughter and I laughed, confident that we would indeed have good hunting. She had selected her Mirkwood Archer patrol, and Gordothil the Mirkwood hero as well as the warriors of Ashra.

I had chosen my perennial favourites- all ranged units- the archer hero Stormy, and archers the Purple Rangers and some new customs my younger son made called the Criss-Cross; ten point each crossbow men untried and a little dubious, if you ask me- but I thought I’d give them a try.

The total figure count was my sons: 17 Goblins and 13 Dwarves, versus 15 total figures for my daughter and myself.

We won the role for initiative and I made for the high ground with my archers. I figured that I’d kill the dwarves before they got to me and the goblins had low defense so I wasn’t worried about them.

My daughter joined me on the height but sent the warriors of Ashra (the only classic heroscape figures in the game) out to engage the still far away enemy.

A couple of goblins riding wolves arrived first and killed one Purple ranger who wasn’t on the height but the goblin riders all ate arrows and fell very quickly after that.

And good hunting we had! Every archer felled a goblin or a dwarf with every shot. The goblins were faster and were in our face quickly but we keep plugging them and they kept falling.

And then all of a sudden the dwarves were there! The faster moving goblins had kept us busy while the dwarves slowly came into position.

dwarves engage

I tried pulling back so I could keep firing unengaged but the remaining goblins scrambled all over us and the dwarves hacked us to pieces. Our figures fell one after another to the dwarven axes and bows.

The goblin general has a strange special called Vogal Fire- he’s an archer- and if he hits you and gets the right 20d roll you’re defense goes down by one permanently. And it can be cumulative.

aftermath

My “pull back” turned into a rout and soon my daughter and I had no one left standing. My son still had 4 goblins, including the unwounded general and my other son still had 10 dwarves, including all the heroes, unwounded.

Bad hunting!

Its awesome reading about the new level of play youve made for you and your family. I mean, only one classic heroscape squad in the game? And its nice to see your kids getting involved and creative with their armies too.
