To Frenzy or not to Frenzy

I'm in a pickle.

I get to go to GenCon this year, which is awesome. I'm playing in the Main Event, which is even more awesome. My only other GenCon trip had me finish in the Top 8 of the Main Event, which I think is my greatest Heroscape accomplishment to date.

I'd love to duplicate that feat again this year, or even surpass it, especially since I know that I probably won't make it to GenCon every year, meaning my chances of representing on the biggest stage could be slim. So, up until about a week ago, I was set on playing one of 2 armies - both of which were highly evil, competitive, and I thought gave me a chance to go the distance.

Then, a week ago, phantazm21zero said to me while I was debating with him which of the two armies to play, "Play Vipers - you know you want to."

Yeah - easily for him to say knowing that he's playing the same army he's already used to win 3 tournaments up here.

At first I dismissed this, but then I started thinking about it. The point total, reinforcement schedule and maps are actually pretty favorable to a Venoc Viper army. Plus, I have a Dragon Wars ticket for Saturday morning if I don't make Day 2. Lastly, Venocs are my favorite unit to play and one that I've sworn to try to prove in the competitive arena. But do I really want to try and prove it on THE competitive arena of competitive arenas?

I don't know. My desire to make a run at winning the championship and proving my Heroscape skillz are clashing with my desire to play a really fun army and see if I can win with it (knowing I have something else to do Saturday morning if I don't make it). I'm sure that I'd have fun if I lost games with Vipers, but I'm also sure I'd enjoy winning games with the other army. I like the maps for Vipers, but I don't like that I'll probably see a lot of melee bonding, 4-figure ranged squads and Q9's ugly metal arse.

I'm truly at an impass. I fear that if I play Vipers, I won't make Day 2. But, I also feel like, with some good dice and decent matchups, I could pull a 4-1 and sneak in there, and if I do the reinforcements for my army are sick.

What would you do?

Curse you phantazm.....

I know I posted that that army was cool, and I still think that, but I'm not pushing you to play it.

I've learned over the years that I regret playing fun stuff at GenCon and rather wanted to just try to place my best. And this year I'm finally sticking to it. But playing anyting is fun for me.

Well, you may not be able to go the GenCon every year correct? So I'd treat the main event as a special event to try and perform your absolute best. But your best could be with anyting you're comfortable with (and that could be something that will accomplish making a new competitive name for itself, like the Venocs) and not just typical armies.

Ultimately it's your decision and ultimately you should have fun. So what's more fun? Playing a favorite army, try to be unique, and go far with it or place high and get a sweet prize and rank. Either way will be fun I thnk. Oh and also, I think you could cream and advance with that Viper build; I'm not at all saying you'll place lower with that than you would with the typicals. Good luck!

Thanks for the suggestions, guys.

This decision would be way, way easier if I could just be there Thursday and play in Smackdown or General Wars. Then I could just play Vipers there and cheese in the Main Event.

2 years ago, I was debating between 3 armies and I had a game day at my house to prep for GenCon with the 6 of us that were going to decide. I used all 3 multiple times that day and went with the one that did the best. I'm going to try and do that again but I don't know if I have enough time.

A random question that might help me decide - are repaints allowed at GenCon? I don't have 6 squads of Vipers, but I do have 4 squads + a badly repainted squad + a squad of EOV....

Excellent - my black Vipers were going to stage a sit-in if they weren't allowed at GenCon.

I'm going to try and get a Vipers vs. Trons playtest in tonight. I think it's gonna be ugly one way or another....

I say play the army you enjoy playing the most. If it is the vipers you love then play them. Not that I don't want to win, but to me I want to have fun more then I want to win.

I will have a lot of my HS stuff there if you need extra vipers let me know
