TGRF's Fan Fiction Chronicles - Entry #46

In case you missed it, I have finished the first of the prequels to Eternity. Utgar is live, and can be viewed at your pleasure.

With Utgar finished, I turned my attention to the next fan fiction in line, which continued the prequels: Einar. It was then that some problems arose.

You can probably guess what the plan was here. Originally, the prequels were going to follow each of the five original Valkyrie as they rose to power. While working on Utgar though, I came to realize that I had no story for Vydar or Ullar, and was only including them because they were one of the five Valkyrie. Including material for no reason is a sure way to fail, so I cut the number of short prequels from five to three, leaving Utgar, Einar, and Jandar. Utgar was already well on the way, and I had a good idea for what I wanted with Einar and Jandar.

Like I said, some problems occurred. Before I get to that though, I need to mention something about how a fan fiction starts.

All of my fan fiction comes from inspiration. I get a glimpse of a single scene or moment from the story, and there's always a drive to write that scene. The story expands outwards from there, until I have a good idea of what I want to happen. Then development takes over and fills in the gaps.

Without that initial scene, I only go so far. I can often have an idea for a fan fiction, but these ideas usually spring off of other stories I've written, and are not the inspiration-induced scenes which can create stories of their own. This has happened plenty, where I'll have an idea for a spin off from something I've written, but after awhile the spin off just dies after not going anywhere.

Back to Eternity. It took me a while to realize it, but I had done that with the prequels. I had ideas for Einar and Jandar, but no actual inspiration.

That's actually been the story with a lot of Eternity. Before I had thought of the prequels, I was going through a ton of iterations, and now that I look back at them, a lot of them were just ideas generated by the worldbuilding I was doing at the time. There were a few inspired scenes, and I plan to pursue those, but the prequels needed to happen first, so that there was some groundwork in place.

So now there is a problem. I've written Utgar, and I've realized that the inspiration required for Einar and Jandar is not there. So at this point I am basically trying to flood myself with inspiration until I get a scene, so that I can start developing it. The only question is: what will that scene be? There's a chance it will be about Einar, Jandar, or one of the other Valkyrie (or Utgar again for that matter). But there's also a chance (probably a bigger one), that it will be about the Eternity series in general. If that happens, the rest of the planned prequels will be skipped, and we'll dive straight into Eternity.

Keep an eye on my signature. I'll keep it updated as my interest fluctuates. Until then, keep reading.
