Scaper of the Week Interview #64

This week's Scaper is known as the "PA/MD/NJ Tourney Promoter" to some. He's well known is his tri state area for the many tournaments he has hosted the past two years.

And clancampbell fears playing him.

Allow me to introduce:

-Scaper of the Week #64 -

tom

Who are you? Tom Lynch

Who, or what, is your avatar and how did you come up with your username?
Currently, my avatar is The Incredible Hulk. My user name is my real name only with a lower case "T". I'm creative like that.

Age: 32

Occupation?
Attorney

Allegiance and why?
Utgar. He's the original bad boy of Scape.

When did you get into HeroScape and why?
I got into HS at the very beginning. I was attending my very first meeting of a game club here in PA (EPGS) and a father and son asked me to join them in a game they had just picked up. Since I didn't really know anybody else there I jumped at the chance. An hour later I was hooked on Scape.

Favorite aspect of HeroScape and why?
The best part about HS is its' simplicity. This is a game that you can teach to just about anyone, but it still has enough interesting decisions for more hardcore gamers to enjoy.

Favorite Unique Hero and why?
Cyprien Essenwein. He is as quick as lightning and really packs a punch if your D20 is showing you some love. He is a great thematic hero.

Favorite Uncommon Hero and why?
Fen Hydra. Whether he succeeds brilliantly or fails spectacularly he is always a blast to play.

Favorite Common Hero and why?
Drow Chainfighter. He's got decent stats and a cool power. Get over here!

Favorite Unique Squad and why?
Marro Warriors. 4 ranged figures with 3 defense for 50 points? Done.

Favorite Common Squad and why?
Zombies of Morindan. I am a huge zombie fan and this unit is so fun. Plus they give me an excuse to moan "Braaaaiiiiiinnnns!" every time I play them.

Favorite Special Ability and why?
Zombies Rise Again. There is nothing better then wiping out your opponent and still having all your dudes on the board.

Agent Carr or Tandros Kreel?
Carr because of his special relationship with everyone's favorite Doggin.

Anything you'd change about the game - a unit, rule, or mechanic?
I would like to see it back in print.

What do you enjoy most about Heroscapers.com?
I know that this has been said many times before, but it has to be the people. The friends that I have made through this site are just fantastic.

Favorite HeroScape moment:
I have had so many great Scape moments that I can't possibly just choose one. I have to admit though that I love it when people like Clancampbell curse under their breath when they find out they are playing me in the next round of a tournament.

Another board game you enjoy and why?
Chad Jensen's Combat Commander: Europe. I think it is the best WWII squad level combat game bar none. It forces you to make tons of tough choices and really rewards skillful play. My only complaint is that I always have trouble finding opponents.

Three true things and one lie about yourself:

1. I was part of a plot to push my brother out of an airplane.
2. I have been kayaking in the Bermuda Triangle... in the dark.
3. I am looking forward to attending my 4th GenCon this summer.
4. I love talking about myself.

Other interests?
I like to play just about any type of boardgame out there. I also enjoy reading and sleeping. Especially sleeping.

Five Fun Favorites

Favorite TV Show: The Walking Dead on AMC

Favorite Movie Of All Time: The Empire Strikes Back

Favorite book: Shogun by James Clavell

Favorite sport: Football

Favorite food: Potatoes

Obviously your title explains it all; how long have you be organizing tournaments? What motivated you to host them?
I have been going to tournaments for about 3 years now and organizing them for about 2. The reason I started organizing tournaments was primarily to take some of the burden off of the other organizers in the area. That and I was getting tired of always having to drive 2 hours to get to a tournament. The best way to avoid driving to a tournamnet is to host one of your own!

For those who have never hosted a tourney (unlike me), care to describe the work it involves?
Honestly I don't think it involves all that much work. The Eastern PA, NJ, MD group has been holding tournaments for so long now that we all pretty much know what to do. The biggest challenge for me was finding a place to hold 20+ people comfortably for 5 hours. After that, choosing a format and getting people to sign up are really all thats left.

What is the most fun aspect of hosting tournaments?
Seeing a bunch of your friends gathered together and playing a game that we all enjoy.

Have you had any major problems while hosting a tourney? Such as an unruly person or object?
Everyone who comes out to our tournaments is there to have a good time. I don't ever remember having a problem at one of my events.

How often do your own maps make it to your tourneys? Do you have any new maps in the works, possibly BoV?
I always bring one or two of my own creations to a tournament. It is one of the few opportunities I get to playtest them. Unfortunately I don't have any maps in the works at the moment. I've been too busy lately.

Any Heroscapers member you'd really like to play against?
I'd like to play Dr. Weirdscaper just so I could see one of his maps in person.

What message do you have for the community?
Get out to a local tournament and keep on Scapin!

What Units would you like to see in the next Unit Debate?
Drow Chainfighter vs. Sahaugin Raider

Who do you pick for the next 'Scaper of the Week?

Congrats tom! I'm assuming #1 is the lie, either that or you were skydiving. Great interview MegaSilver! Can't wait for peterparkerh's. He and tom both are definitely well deserved S'sotW.

Good interview Tom! Nice choice for the next SotW.

I'm pretty sure I know which is the lie, but I don't want to give it away.

I'm guessing that number 4 is the lie. Look at how short his responses to everything else is.

I played Tom in something at GenCon. I think General Wars. We were laughing and having a good time. Maybe that was his plan to get me off guard. Nooo.

It must be #4 cause the only person you ever talk about is yourself!

Great interview for a truly deserving scaper who has done a lot for our region.

For the record, I don't mutter under my breath when I find out were matched up together (maybe thats cause I whipped you a few times )

Great choice for the next SoTW as well. Looking forward to hearing from my bud.

I'm going to guess it's 3 because of some scheduling conflict.

I had no idea (a) you were also an attorney or (b) a kayaker, and though I am not, my brother recently kayaked from Barcelona, Spain to Naples, Italy, so it's something I like to talk about.

Huh.

Looking forward to peteparkerh's; I hope there are questions about his LotR series of maps.

Megasilver, you're doing a great job with these.

I'm going to go with #4 is the lie, since your answers were fairly short throughout the interview.

Nice interview TOM, and even though we've chatted many times at the local PA/MD/NJ tournaments, today I feel that I've gotten to know something more about you. One of my favorite HS moments was when we played each other in West Chester and I got distracted with my heroes trying to secure the high ground on both flanks and your horde of zombies walked through the middle and caught my 3x squads of 10th Reg. redcoats still in my start zone.
