People are Evil

Posted May 6th, 2010 at 01:23 PM by Sylvano the Wasabus
I have always thought I was a fair and tolerant person.
I have always liked children, even other people’s.
I have always tried to take life’s up and downs with the least amount of stress, like a balloon on a string.

I am self-deluded.

I no longer like other people’s children.
Or other people.
Or balloons on string. That is a really stupid analogy anyway.

In the past I have welcomed friends that came over with their wee ones. I watched happily as the kids viewed our Scape investment with awe. Dragons. Robots. Weird slimy creatures. Horses Dwarves. I even let them play with the figures that were out in our permanently setup Heroscape room. I thought “great- new players in the making.”

Now this has changed forever.

There is a new house rule. DON’T TOUCH THE SCAPE. Nasty evil parents with their filthy fingered offspring. Don’t go in the Heroscape room!...

Brustwehrs

Posted April 30th, 2010 at 12:25 PM by Sylvano the Wasabus
No, it’s not a kind of salmon sandwich.
And, it’s not some form of German swimming brassiere.
A Brustwehr is our version of a mantlet for dwarves.
Ah, what’s a mantlet?
No, it’s not the space for sublet in a man’s head or abdomen. And it’s not some kind of cannibal cutlet. It’s a portable parapet- Brustwehr is German for parapet. Probably.

Our large and much beloved dwarf army has some serious weaknesses. The most major being we only give the figures three movement.

In some past major engagements our dwarven host suffered heavy losses at the hands of some miserable centaurs whose range and movement made them practically untouchable. So in true dwarf spirit we set about solving this problem.

Some of our dwarves have “black cloak camouflage”. They are wearing black cloaks- they’re customs and I painted them that way and the black coat gives them an extra die against ranged attacks. But it...

Dwarves versus Templars

Posted April 28th, 2010 at 01:27 PM by Sylvano the Wasabus
Our First House Tournament Game

In our never-ending quest to escape three-player jeopardy we decided to have a house tournament. It was to be a 550 point game between two people, with the third person creating the map.

My younger son challenged me. He is a dwarf lover. I wrote some stories for him for Xmas (a family tradition) featuring some of our dwarf customs figures and he got really hooked. At his behest we have filled out a pretty good-sized dwarven force and so he was anxious to field them against me.

I, of course, picked the Templars. It was going to be my first opportunity to play with three new figures, including the custom Templar healer my kids created for me for my birthday.

My older son predicted that it would be a blood bath- he’s very anti-dwarf and he guaranteed that the low movement (our custom dwarves typically have a move of three) would spell the dwarves’ demise.

Shrubberies

Posted April 23rd, 2010 at 10:13 AM by Sylvano the Wasabus
I will be the first to admit that my shrubbery is not the most beautiful shrubbery in the history of shrubberies. My shrubbery is not even on the 1000 best shrubberies list. That said, I still like my bushes, and when it’s set on the terrain it looks good, at least to me.

Our shrubberies are easy to make and we include it amongst our destructible objects- it is not fastened to a hex but rather a poker chip base, so it can be removed at any time. A bush usually has one life and a defense of 3 or 4. Sometimes if we’re playing a really wild game the shrubbed areas actually grow.

Anything I was going to make had to be both cheap and easy. I don’t have a lot of spare time or money, and I have lots of kids who Scape so things had to be durable and easy to fix.

I looked through this site before I started working on shrubbery....

Our Custom Mounts

Posted April 21st, 2010 at 12:07 PM by Sylvano the Wasabus
We are really fond of our custom mounts, and they add a lot to our game. These mounts are not tied to any one figure; they can carry anyone and exist independently on the playing field.

Their special abilities offer many bonuses, as well as a height for mounted figures.
Mounts may extend the range of many figures- the mount travels, and then the figure may dismount and use their full movement as well.

Generally large+ figures can’t ride.
Mounts always occupy two squares.
It takes all of a figures remaining movement, be it 1 or 5, to mount.

In the picture: on the left you can see our Mumak, behind is a flying carrier owl, and then some horses and wolves.

Isengarde Wolves

We made these after watching that great scene in the Two Towers- you know the one, where the wolves...
