Bunnies and Witches

Posted November 21st, 2014 at 01:42 PM by Sylvano the Wasabus
My sweetie recently covered the fridge with photos from Halloween. She also included pictures from Halloweens from the last ten years. It was not hard to see the trends, with the pictures side by side like that. She is always a kitty or a bunny, or a witch. Her kitty and bunny are cute and friendly but her witch is evil.

I always seem to be some sort of armoured warrior. One year, a samurai, another year a wolf-headed humanoid. This past Halloween I had goat horns, armour and a nice cape. I learned long ago not to carry weapons on Halloween- they just get in the way. My real purpose is to carry my kids bags of treats. I’m really just a fancy dress sugar mule.

This was the first year I did not make costumes for my kids. Also for the first time, the eldest two didn’t go out. The other two created their own costumes It’s a sign of changing times. The only one who pestered me abut costuming was my sweetie. She wanted to make sure I was dressing...

Writer's Brick

Posted November 8th, 2014 at 04:00 PM by Sylvano the Wasabus
Certainly there are many stories about writers and their “blocks”. Experienced and amateur, all scribblers at some time seem to experience some sort of wordage constipation. All writing stops. Writers are like bee hives- full of activity, and they’re conditioned to believe that they always have to produce honey. What good is a hive that produces no honey? It means you’re a failure. That you are broken and useless.

No one ever looks up facts about honey. I live in Canada where it can get mighty cold. The honey business is seasonal here. There are no black and white winter bees flying around looking for ice flowers. It helps to step back and look at the big picture once in a while. Honey is great, but everything is cyclical. All of us have cycles- physical, emotional, mental. Some people are wonderful- and then they have to step back and recharge. Writers have to recharge too. I’m sure local bees would prefer to have an endless summer- wouldn't we all? But...

Coming Anarchy?

Posted September 5th, 2014 at 02:34 PM by Sylvano the Wasabus
I am just getting old or is the world becoming a scarier place?

There was an ad hoc meeting in my neighbourhood last night. Rumour has it that the new person in the house with the flag is a sex offender interested in little girls My neighbours are plotting to drive him out. Or beat him up. Or kill him.

The news is always full of scary things, anymore. War, hate, refugees- it’s a surprise to me that our species has survived at all. In Libya and Iraq the removal of brutal dictators have left chaos.

Do people not know how to behave? You’d think with a nasty dictator gone people could organize the kind of society they wanted.. A fair just one. But what if having never lived in one they don’t know exactly what it is?

Or is it a case of guys with guns and personal agendas take the opportunity to do whatever they want because there is no one around to stop them? Small groups can “get more stuff”. Why not just take the things...

Scape Lessons for Life

Posted August 29th, 2014 at 10:43 AM by Sylvano the Wasabus
Scape Lessons for Life

If you’re like me, maybe you find more and more things in life remind me of Scape. Here are a few ideas about some of the similarities:

1. Map building can be a pain and it takes up space and dining room tables and it takes too long and there are all the storage issues and if you’re free building it can take a couple of tries and you’re always missing just the right piece but if you do a good job you can make something really nice and keep it around for a while.
The same is true of life. Your must build your own map, your own life structure and it takes too long and you don’t always know what you’re doing but if you keep at it you end up with a pretty nice life that you can enjoy and add on to. It won’t happen if you don’t build it. And if things change you may have to rebuild again- but you’ll know how.

2. Like the Knights of Weston we all have our stats- Scape figures have move, range, attack and...

Jandar in a corner

Posted August 15th, 2014 at 01:52 PM by Sylvano the Wasabus
We’ve been playing on a new map- it’s a big map, like we usually have but this one is bisected by a river six hexes wide. It’s bridged in the center with road tiles. Our current usual scenario is a kind of capture the flag with six flags- but once you have it captured you can move on.

Last night I faced my two older sons. I took Jandar. I knew my eldest son was taking the latest incarnation of his Skaven (ratmen) forces, so I made sure I took a mage who could hit with an area of effect attack. Since the skaven usually have low defence a good seven hex fire storm wipes quite a few off the map.

The skaven have an advantage which is also a deadly weakness. They are allowed to have two figures per hex- meaning they move better and when they are adjacent there’s twice as many attacks. But it’s also a terrible weakness against figures, like mages, who can target a hex or hexes rather than an individual figure.

I wasn’t feeling hopeful. ...
