Crossing the Species Boundary

Posted September 17th, 2010 at 04:39 PM by Sylvano the Wasabus
I donít know how the idea first came to me.

Probably because house cats are always around, waiting, watching. Ours is a cranky old female- her most common game is to stare at you and meow in this why-do-you-always-betray-me kind of way. Itís number four on my list of the most annoying things.

She always seems to be watching me. She watches when I cook, and when I change clothes. Come to think of it, she even comes in the bathroom and watches when I shower. Itís like having a stalker that you have to feed.

Once I got the idea I couldnít stop thinking about it. How could I get it to work with her and I? Crossing the species boundary just isnít done, really in any kind of activity. Maybe the time has come.

Iím talking about Scaping here of course. But you knew that.

Her name is Andrea, but she gets called Andy for short. Sheís had a hard life- a good start but then shifted from place...

The Fall of St. Isaac

Posted September 15th, 2010 at 05:23 PM by Sylvano the Wasabus
(a battle report from our big game, pictures near the bottom)

St. Isaac is an outpost on the great road that connects the Templar capitol, St. Jerome, and Grok, the Orc capitol.

You might ask why anyone would connect these two places with a road. Well it wasnít exactly planned that way- the armies built the roads as they surged towards each other.

As the Orc Kingdom began to expand early in the game, the Templars chose to challenge them for the outposts near Grok- hopefully limiting the Orc expansion. It was a gamble, and predictably a fierce war erupted between the Templars and Orcs.

There are two great alliances at work here- The Templars with the two very minor powers of the dwarves and the samurai, against three large powers: The Orcs, the Elves, and the forces of Arc.

Arc is the invention of my nine year old- (Joan is irrelevant to him) a kind of medieval kingdom known for their cavalry...

Second Chance?

Posted September 10th, 2010 at 05:04 PM by Sylvano the Wasabus
I am once again employed.

My old job, the one where they replaced me with someone with more seniority, has hired me back. In the same job.

I have no idea why.

Itís not stable at all- they said Iíd probably get two months at least. After that, who knows?

Maybe I was foolish. Maybe I should have gone and looked elsewhere- but I didnít. I went back.

At least the desk was clean.

Itís really brutal right here now. Iím here but other employees are being cut left and right.
The manager is mean and heartless in one breath, and then chats happily about her vacation plans in the next. I do not think I am cut out for this kind of world.

I always tried to think of this as a pirate ship. (sounds a bit silly now). Iíve agreed to help sail this barque and in exchange I get some booty. (not that kind....). Iíve never been able to...

The Killer With Your Name

Posted September 9th, 2010 at 10:20 AM by Sylvano the Wasabus
I was reading news the other day when a name in the headlines caught my eye- it was the name of an acquaintance of mine. But the headline said he was on death row. I looked up the story, found a picture and it was not the same dude.

I was reminded of another acquaintance, one whom I was on my way to meet, only to hear a warning on the radio that a dreaded child molester was just being paroled in this area with the name of my acquaintance. Turned out to be a different guy by the same name, but it gives one pause, doesnít it?

I ended up not becoming friends with both of those guys and even count the later amongst my enemies now.

Do you think names influence behaviour? Do all the Daves or Michaels you know fit into a certain category- have something in common? There are a couple names I steer clear of- nothing but bad experiences over and over again. (eg. Never trust a Doug)

If you have a common name are you...

walking away from work

Posted September 3rd, 2010 at 04:56 PM by Sylvano the Wasabus
It came as a shock. I knew I was being laid off. Iíve known all summer. But I thought I had two more weeks.

But Monday night I got a phone call at home at 9PM. I was outside, watering the beans, hoping to get something from them in this drought. My 9 year old son came out- said there was a woman on the phone for me.

I donít get many calls. I especially donít get many calls from women, especially at 9PM. I went in- not curious, but wary. Beware of women on the phone!

It was work calling. The woman was assistant to the head administrator. She told me that Tuesday, the next day, would be my last. Any questions? I had none. (Except Why Are You Calling Me at 9PM?)

Didnít sleep so well.

So I went in Tuesday, and began to clear out my desk. Like me, everyone had thought I still had two weeks. There were tears and outrage. I even took the drawers of the desk out and washed them.
