Our Christmas

Posted December 29th, 2010 at 04:50 PM by Sylvano the Wasabus
With lots of kids and lots of old folks Christmas is always very busy in our family. We all made it through this year. I hope you and your family did too.

Part One: Puke and Terror

I know this makes me sound like a bad father, but somehow- Iím not exactly sure how- our Christmas tradition includes a fellow named Zwarta Pete. I know heís Sinder Clausí helper in Denmark or something- but for us he is sinister and scary. Heís a Moor- a tall, unsmiling man with dark skin who carries a sword and rides a horse. And heís not Santa Clausí helper. He rides through towns hunting down bad children- when he catches them he puts them in bags and then ties the bags to his horse and takes them away. Later, at his leisure, he grinds the bad children up and makes dog food.

Iím not exactly sure how much of this tale is my fault. I certainly am to blame for some of it- but the rest somehow sprouted up all on its own.

Can you guess who this is?

Can you guess who this is?

It's probably really easy.

You know, I donít hate cameras. I think theyíre fascinating. How do they do what they do? And they have all those neat buttons and little doors. Interesting things, for sure.
But why do cameras hate me so?

Iím on my third camera this year. Perhaps itís because theyíre all cast offs from friends. They always say the camera works fine- and it usually does for a little bit, then it goes wonky. It makes me wonder if my friends are playing tricks on me, or do I just have some sort of magic electronic vibe that makes cameras suicide?

Anyway, thatís why I havenít had any pictures for the blog lately. I have some nice ideas, but no way to capture them.

This present camera seems okay but everything is blurry. Either that or my eyes...

Unholy crusades

Posted December 8th, 2010 at 11:47 AM by Sylvano the Wasabus
We seem to have gotten lost in the Crusades. Last nightís battles were peppered with tears, anger, taunts and sharp words.

I will admit I have been playing behind the scenes in the developing political chaos- Iíve learned that from earlier scenarios. My two older sons are first and foremost, and are furious with each other. I seem to be the policeman, trying to keep the peace, reminding them that itís just a game and how lucky we are to be such good friends that we can play this way.

Hereís how it unfolded.
The Crusaders had landed, established a fortified bridgehead and then advanced to the 50 point/turn Fortress of Tyre, which they took. Tyre is distant from the other defenderís main fortresses- Jerusalem and Cairo, and so reinforcements took a long time arriving.

The reinforcements eventually did arrive, and took the fortified bridgehead and then retook Tyre. The Crusaders were threatening along the coast and making...

The McScape Solution

Posted December 1st, 2010 at 04:34 PM by Sylvano the Wasabus
I have done some investigative reporting on behalf of Heroscapers everywhere and hereís what Iíve found:

A rumour attributed to an unnamed credible source (the girl with freckles that I flirt with at the late night drive thru) states that the McDonaldís Corporation is the main contender in the running to purchase Hasbroís Heroscape brand.

ďThe Happy Meal thing has been going really good for a long time. We get all kinds of runny-nosed kids just squealing for the things when they have to wait in line. They love the toys.Ē
The freckled girl at the drive thru told me.

You may have heard that on November 2, 2010, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors passed a law requiring that children's meals sold in restaurants must meet certain nutritional standards before they could be sold with toys. The law, urged in part by increase of childhood obesity in the United States, would allow toys to be included with children's meals that...

The Crusades

Posted November 25th, 2010 at 11:57 AM by Sylvano the Wasabus
Iím not sure how it happened, but my younger son and I were grocery shopping and we suddenly became very interested in the crusades.
Well, grocery shopping is kind of a crusade, donít you think? A crusade is an enterprise undertaken with zeal and enthusiasm and my growing family certainly pursues food with zeal and enthusiasm. They are always hungry.
But thatís not the real reason the topic came up, of course.

My younger son, ten now, is very into this custom hero he created, Suri of Arc, who was a legendary leader of that mythical kingdom. (not to be confused with the area in France once know as Arc, where Joan hailed from) My son has written this book with about forty chapters about Suriís rise to power. Thereís more to the story too, my son has played all the way to the end- Suriís death.

Weíve been reading his book and Iím impressed. Suri is no stereotypical hero. Heís kind of a fool. Arc was ruled by a wise ruler (of...
