D1 Had No Feet

Posted April 14th, 2010 at 04:41 PM by Sylvano the Wasabus
For my family, the Heroscape adventure stopped.

We don’t have a lot of money. I’m a single dad with four kids and they’re just getting into dental braces.
To fund our heroscape addiction we have a jar on the kitchen table where spare money goes: money the kids earn shoveling snow in the neighbourhood, birthday money from grandma, etc.

We weren’t sure about D1 at all. I have internet at work but we’re not online at home. My daughter had been checking it out at the library, since she’s got the scape bug now too.
I’d come home Wednesday night after work (a late evening for me, working until 7pm usually) and relate what Truth had blogged about for the upcoming release.
I wasn’t hooked until the hydra- and that got my kids going too. However the phantom knights didn’t look all that great; so we made a plan to repaint them.

We ticked off the days on the calendar until the release came, and then waited a week because we’re in Canada, and then waited an extra three days just in case, and then we trooped down to the only LGS in the city to carry scape and found… nothing. No D1.
We were stunned. We just stood there staring at the one SOTM set and the three Marvel sets and … and… didn’t know what to do.
We tried going to the Games Workshop store to cheer ourselves up but the cult members/sales clerks always chase us away with their wild-eyed hunger for new souls.

What were we going to do?
D1 was not coming.
It was like a Christmas that didn’t happen. We talked about ordering online- but to get scape from the states through the mail is expensive- usually there’s the exchange rate, the shipping, and then custom fees at the border. Our little jar isn’t big enough for that. And we don’t have passports to cross the border for a crazy scape trip either.

The spring days lost their luster. As a family, we moped.

We tried to talk ourselves out of D1- well; those phantom knights didn’t look that great. And my one son was really disturbed that the hydra doesn’t have feet. We told him it slithered, but for him the no-feet thing became really important.

How much of Heroscape is about the ongoing development and acquisition? Maybe too much, I began to think.

And then my daughter came back all girlie giggly from the mall. She’d been out with her friends and they’d stopped at the LGS. Or rather she’d stopped- her friends wouldn’t be caught dead in there. They looked at purses at the store next door.

“They have it,” She said. “D1 is here. And the phantom knights looking amazing.”

We piled into the car and went to the store. I was jingling because the jar was mostly full of $1 and $2 coins, which are common in Canada.

We looked at all of the different packs of D1. Would we buy them all? Yes, we decided. There was a small discount if we took the whole set.

The evil tyrant who runs the LGS smiled at us. Was it the first time I’ve seen him smile?

“These I like.” He said, stuffing them into one of those oddly smelling plastic bags. “These are nice, they have character, not like the other ones.”

I always suspected he hated Scape.

My kids took turns looking at the boxes as we drove back. At home it was like Christmas, carefully opening each package, checking out the cards, and saving the pictures on the front of the packaging.

My son skipped supper to battle- booster against booster. It came down to the Fen Hydra booster against the Ice Elemental booster, and the Hydra went down.
His favourites are the Earth/Water/Fire elementals. He’s already “corrected” their stats and abilities to fit into our permutation of Heroscape.

My one son is still bothered that the hydra doesn’t have feet, and they tease me terribly because Brandis Skyhunter is the same sculpt as my favourite custom- and Brandis is infinitely superior they insist. He isn’t really, but they know it bugs me.

So, we’re still in the game. For now.

I agree Pickledpie! I'd like to teach him a lesson...

I'm happy you finally got some D1 StW! It's a neat wave, especially the Hydra "No Feet."

As to the elementals, maybe your son should have waited before customizing them, as an elementalist will be coming out in D2 to turn them into psuedo-squads.
