Deepwyrm Drow Dispatched

My first Battle Report

I love reading the battle reports and Iíve always wanted to write one myself. The problem is my kids and I play a bit of a different version of Scape with 85% customs- so I figure no one would understand what I was talking about. (but I guess I should be used to that by now)

Our game is very large- we use a big wall map to keep track of point producing cities and wells, road and castle building, lakes, mountains, volcano and the progress of armies. We have a permanent basic hex setup on which we mount our battles. (doing this has reduced our setup build time to about ten minutes). Anyway enough setup! On to the battle!

My 12 year old son had a 190 point army in the unexplored area of the map, and he invaded a square containing a point producing well. Unclaimed wells have a ďbandit armyĒ determined by 20d X 10.
Sadly I, the appointed defender, only rolled a 9 so I got to pick a 90 point army to defend. We both rolled fives on the 6d so our basic hex map was augmented with 20 shadow squares. (we have a box of black hexes we cut out of foam).

My son placed his ten shadow hexes in a line in the middle of the board and I scattered mine around my end of the board. My son picked the Marr warriors (one of his favorites) and a squad of 3 Rawrens (custom squad of Confrontation Wolfen, high movement, medium attack, low defense, whirlwind attack and a very annoying and controversial 2 life/squad member. The squad is priced at 140 I think).

I decided I would try the Deepwrym Drow because of all the shadow squares. It was my first time using them and I was excited to give them a try. I thought their poison weapons special would be most useful in dispatching those wicked 2-lifed Rawrens. I didnít expect to win- but if I could kill some of his troops he would lose the points and that would cost him.

Heíd picked the Marr Warriors on purpose, so he could just regenerate them and not lose points. I also took a fate point- they cost 10 points each, and if you take a wound you shake the 6d. If itís a 4, 5, or 6, you ignore the wound. It can only be used once.

As the invader, my son moved first. He decided to hold. I moved into the closest shadow and the Drow smiled. My son held his position. I held mine. So then he moved, finally forming a battle line just out of range of the Drowís movement. The Drow peered out from the shadows at the assembled Rawrens and Marr Warriors. Then my son charged. One of the Drow was back a bit further and all the Marr Warriors concentrated their fire on him, but he hid in darkness and survived. The Rawrens engaged the other two Drow and one fell, the other hid in darkness. My rearmost Drow advanced and engaged a Marr warrior and dispatched him. I was hoping the other Drow, engaged with the Rawrens, would wound and then use poison weapons but he failed. On my sonís turn he slaughtered the remaining two Drow. I forgot to use the fate point. He cloned the dead Marr Warrior, took possession of the well and lost nothing.

I have had spectacular successes recently with small armies against large ones, but this obviously was not one of them. The problem with my kids is that they learn and adapt too darn fast. You beat them one way once, and then you can never repeat a strategy, and I am always left looking for new ones.

I didnít really have a clear strategy this time Ė usually I favor ranged units. I probably could have taken out at least two Rawrens if I used our Purple Rangers (A4, R7, special +2 A join in) But I guess I hadnít expected to win and the Drow performed all right. Iíll use them again, and definitely make some custom Drow to help them out.

Awesome Battle Report! Do you use customs all the time? Have you and your kids ever played "regular" 'scape?

Keep up the good work! You know, you can also start your own battle report thread here, and post pics of your battles.

We use customs all the time. Sometimes we don't actually play, we just make customs. We sort of missed out on getting most of the boosters, so most of our stuff is custom. My sons played regular scape twice, and they thought it was all right.

Sounds like you're having a great time. That's what its all about. If you look in the custom battlefields section, you'll see all kinds of interesting stuff!

Haha, some people play 'Scape seriously and by the book, but you're doing what should be done: Having fun!

I'm in awe of how much fun it sounds like you guys are having! Keep it up!
