’Scaper of the Month
lonewolf
Author: The Grim Reaper’s Friend

To be honest I have nothing to say here. I had never encountered lonewolf on the site, so I’ll let his interview speak for him.

Profile

Who are you really?
Mike.

How old are you?
47.

What is your occupation?
RF System Performance Engineer.

What’s another board game/RPG you enjoy and why?
Scythe and Agricola are both favorites for me.

What other interests do you have besides HeroScape?
I have 3 kids and 2 grandkids, so they tend to be my interests. Both of my younger boys are club swimmers and competitive chess players, so we spend a lot of time at chess tournaments, swim meets, and swim practice.

I am getting a D&D 5e campaign going with my 3 boys, brother-in-law, and nephew. I am going to run them through Tomb of Anihilation! I am very much looking forward to playing D&D, since I haven’t played since I was a kid.

HeroScape

When and how did you get into HeroScape?
My 24 year old son saw a commercial for it when he was younger and asked for it for Christmas. I got it for him, but procrastinated playing it with him for several months. Finally I played it with him and I loved it. I took it to my brother’s house to play with him and he straightened me out on all the rules that I was playing wrong. I tracked down Heroscapers.com and then started organizing game days in PHX. I read about the Gencon tournaments and decided to make the trek out there and see what it was all about.

Do you have a favorite unit (classic or custom)?
I love the Gladiatron/Blastatron combo.

Describe your favorite HeroScape moment.
Wow—so many. Meeting everyone out at Gencon the first year was amazing. The friends I made from that were awesome. Staying plugged in to that group of gamers from all across the country has been great. Meeting CVN with my son and seeing how much Craig cared about this game and how much he is just a dad playing board games with his kids and making memories just like me. He talked a lot to my son and it was neat to see their interaction.

Is there anything you would change about the game (unit, rule, mechanic, etc.)?
I love the game. The only thing I would consider changing is just balancing out some of the point values to make as many units playable as possible. Many others have already made this happen in an unofficial capacity!

What is your favorite aspect of HeroScape?
I love the community. I like that when I look across the Heroscape tournaments at Gencon, those are my kind of people. Some games attract a different crowd: not “my crowd.” With Heroscape there are many dads playing games with their sons and just a lot of cool people that don’t take themselves too seriously. I think you can be competitive in tournaments and still be a decent person.

Community

Can you tell us how you’ve gotten to where you are now in the community?
I just got plugged in and had a passion for the game. I think that this is a great place for people who have that in common too.

I noticed you’re involved in the GenCon scene. What’s your favorite experience involving GenCon?
I loved coming to the tournaments the first time and just soaking it all in. Nowadays I love making sure the tournaments are run well and we have some sort of prize support!

What do you enjoy most about Heroscapers.com?
I like that there is great information and a great community here.

Is there any member of Heroscapers.com you’d really like to play against?
I am really not a competitive Heroscape player any more. The only time I seem to play it is at Gencon and you can’t be good if you don’t play on a regular basis in my opinion. Anyone who has played against me at Gencon lately knows that my game isn’t very good any more. Because of this I can really enjoy the game and have fun without being competitive. For me, having smooth-running tournaments is as much fun as playing in them. There isn’t anyone in specific I’d like to play with ... I’ll play anyone!

Lie Detector

Three truths and a lie
  • My wife had Jordan Sparks in her Chemistry class.
  • I started college when I was 30, but now have a Bachelor’s in Electrical Engineering and an MBA.
  • My parents met at NASA.
  • I was the general manager of a Jack in the Box.

Last Month’s Lie (skyknight)
  • I once walked out of a smoking pile that was a helicopter crash with just a few bruises.
  • I am Michael Phelps’s (the swimmer) first cousin.
  • I helped rescue a British Climbing team off the side of Denali (largest peak in North America) at 18,400 feet just before they would have likely died.
  • I was once involved in an international incident with the Russian Military.

Three Fun Favorites

Favorite Movie Genre and Movie
Action movies with some romance thrown in. Top 3 in no order are Last of the Mohicans, Count of Monte Cristo, and Dances with Wolves.

Favorite Book Genre and Book
The books I read are rule books! My favorite book that I read was also the Count of Monte Cristo.

Favorite Song Genre and Song
Love the 80s. Anything Journey/Def Leppard/Van Halen is a win for me. My 11-year-old son has been learning to play “Faithfully” by Journey for his piano recital. It makes my soul warm to hear him play it every time.
