Semi-symmetrical board

Posted February 16th, 2009 at 10:12 PM by erniehacks
A couple of weeks ago, I built a semi-symmetrical board and after tweaking it with a couple of test runs against myself, unveiled it to a group of friends who had never heard of Heroscape for an evening of hilarity.

I don't have time to place the photos inline, but you can check out the gallery on Flickr.

The board consists of:
1 RoTV
1 SotM
1 M:CB
1 RttFF
1 TJ
Assorted hexes from small expansions (such as the snow). I wish I had more details than the photos, because this board proved to be very fun for our hodge-podge armies.

My goal was to build a board that used all of the tiles and also created some tactical opportunities. The start zones are "walled in" by cliffs and RttFF trees near the icy island end, to drive units towards the roads that wrap around jungle and ruins. The cliffs form ridge lines that slope down towards the center of the board, while the roads rise towards the bridge, which is the highest point. So the concept was to build a W shaped board, where units head south to a road, then double back to meet on a central hill. The outer ridges form a nice vantage point for snipers but are usually a hex lower than the central hill, so there's an incentive to get to the middle of the board.

And after an hour of typing up a detailed battle report, I just accidentally refreshed the page. So that's all folks. Suffice to say that Sonlen is a great Spidey counter and it sucks to lose 2 well-positioned KMAs to a single shield throw from Captain America.
