Final D3 Preview: National Heroscape Day

I just got home from the New England NHSD event. Across the country today players sat down across the table to roll some dice together. If your local NHSD event was anything like mine, you came away with a bunch of fun stories, and hopefully a few new rivals!

I'm excited to announce that WotC gave us permission to release the preview set of D3 to some lucky participants on National Heroscape Day. So a few lucky players in New England, Texas, and Iowa walked away from the events with some very exclusive prizes!

At each of those 3 events today we revealed one final figure, and for those of you not attending, here they are!

Moltenclaw:

Moltenclaw might look like just a short range Mimring at first. However, once you play on a battlefield with him, you'll realize he completely changes the way your opponent thinks about placement!

Ice Troll Berserker:

The Ice Troll is a quick, low cost hero for the Arrow Gruts to bond with, and a really force on any snow filled battlefield!

Master of the Hunt:

The master of the hunt is the final new sculpt in the wave. Since he's in the common pack, he's an Uncommon Hero that fights for Einar. He's a perfect addition to Einar's forces, and a very exciting figure to field in an army.

I guess that the reason for things like 1 space bases etc. is VARIATION, which is Scape's greatest strength. The designers probably don't have control of the overall issue over time, and have to work in something of a vacuum, one figure or wave at a time. Given that, what a great work they are creating!

I like all three of these. Moltenclaw for power and sculpt, Ice Troll for terrain dependent powers, and Master of the Hunt for both sculpt and powers. Great Celtic feel for the Firbolg!

I've been having a great time with the new D3 figures...

Its absolutly hilarious how many comments are exactly the opposite of another. Someone should graph THAT...

Moltenclaw rock's now that I understand his power. So much better than Memring. I mean seriously if you think about it, how often does Memring get all 8 spaces to do his fireline without putting himself in total danger that he will most certainly walk away with at least 2 wounds? I wish Molten claw would have had 4 defense though, his attack and life and move are pretty good though. Personally I don't know why some of you don't like the one spaced large guys. It gives Moltenclaw a HUGE advantage over the other dragons. I mean usually at the top of a mountain i'll make it be one space, not 2(for some reason it looks better lol)which could mean Moltenclaw could gain the highest spot. I don't know I think that the large one spaces will be a huge tactical advantage to the other 2 spaced guys.

Hmmmmm I think I might just cut that Ice troll's nose off lol! He would have been way better if he had had 5 or 6 life though. I mean 2 defense/ 4 life isn't the best odds. I rather like his regeneration power though.

The master of the Hunt: Sculpt is awesome. Powers are awesome. The fact that he's uncommon? It almost ruins him!! I mean he looks like the PERFECT unique character and being Uncommon just dosn't make him as special in the games..............

Overall good figures I really liked this wave and hope to get every last bit of it!!!

Molten Claw isn't terribly big for the people worrying about his base. About the same size as Othkurik just standing up. I saw him at the Tree Town Open in Iowa today. He seems really cool and his special is definitely more versatile than Mimrings, but I can't help but think 170 is too high for him. Thinking more along the lines of 150-160, but I might proxy to see.

I have a man crush on Master of the Hunt, despite him not having any Hunter synergy like a lot us were speculating. What an awesome sculpt and power.

Ice Troll Berserker seems cool, but definitely map dependent. Without access to Thaelenk Tundra he'll probably be stuck in storage. Well....on second thought I guess you could use him with the Greater Ice Elemental.

I really like the ice troll, the fact that he is single spaced really adds a new dynamic to the arrow gruts bonding. The master of the hunt is pretty cool as well, but i don't see him doing to well in play in tournaments because of the new age of the phantom knights. Moltenclaw in my opinion isn't all that great, his figure is cool and his ability is interesting but i think overall it won't be very affective because of his slow move compared to the other dragons and the fact that he is basically mimring but instead of a straight 8, it goes 4 and 4.

I like him, good move, life & attack power. He seems to fit in well with the Einar Gladiator look.

Since he is a "hunter" does he get any bonding?

Is there some particular reason that the preview pics seem to contain horribly bent weapons? For the love of all that is good and pure, someone please straighten Master of the Hunt's spear!!! At least he isn't attacking himself with it.

It's a boomerang spear. That way if he misses he can throw it again next turn.

I believe that is the way that TheGuru received them. Are you suggesting that he should have changed what he received?

They've mentioned before all the preview figures were shipped straight from the factory in China in crappy packaging, so a lot of the figures are getting bent.

but I can't help but wonder what the "game reality" reason is for him to sometimes add 3 to his range.
I'm scratching my head, too. He already has 4 Range...where does the other 3 come from??

Quote:
Moltenclaw: How is this guy worth 20 more points than Mimring? Yeah his base attack and life are both 1 point greater, but his special has less range,
Last time I checked, 4 + 4 = 8.

Quote:
It's like deadly strike except the second wound is guaranteed!
So, you'd rather roll 3 dice, get 2 skulls, the opponent rolls 1 shield, and now you have a 50/50 shot at a second wound...instead of rolling 3 dice, getting 2 skulls (4 hits), the opponent rolling 1 shield, and scoring 3 wounds??

Intereseting units. The ice troll isn't half bad for his points. He bonds, hits 5 and regenerates for only 85 points. The master of the hunt has a neat sculpture but is out classed by most of the other 140 heros in the game. Molten claw is very cool. I will have to play him to see just how well he plays but I think he will end up somewhere between Mimring and Nilf in how cool he is. With one more defence he would have been almost on par with the old ice dragon.

These new scuplts are really awesome. I especially like the Master of the Hunt with his Mortal Stike ability, one that could come in handy at knocking out heroes with high lives (I'm looking at you Charos...).

However, when I read some of those powers I now realise that alot of these latest figures require snow and lava spaces fo their abilites, and that they aren't sold as often as they use to be. I reckon that Wizards of the Coast need to either;
a)re-release these terrain expansion or
b) they need to create new terrain expansion while still using the old terrain (eg a new snow expansion that doesn't have the Dzu-Teh, maybe they could have new figures!).
