FFC #71 - Subplots, and what's next

TGRF's Fan Fiction Chronicles - Entry #71

So after the somewhat dismal last FFC, I have some good news. After extensive discussion with TAF (thanks again for your input), I think I've nailed down the issue behind the absent middles in my stories, and how to fix them. All that remains now is to put my theories to the test.

Basically the solution comes down to adding subplots, so you can expect the next story to have several mini-stories going on throughout it in addition to the main plot. I have done this before with HiS, but I'll be approaching subplots from a different angle this time, so we'll see what happens.

That leaves one remaining question: what is the next story?

For a while now, I've had basically two stories sloshing around in my head. Interest wavers between them at random intervals, but neither can really seem to get off the ground. They are:
  • A sequel to Valkyrie, continuing the history of Valhalla. I've been working on this for awhile and at this point I have a technically working plot. This story also does some things I've never done before, and I'm curious to see if I could pull them off. However, the story also lacks those subplots I mentioned above, so it's short and feels generally lackluster. I feel like if I were to use it, I'd need to change it quite a bit.
  • A post-war Valhalla story, set in Aaryglynn and involving vampires somehow. I spent a lot of time on this story before the Valkyrie sequel, and have a lot of worldbuilding invested which is serving to keep my interest fluctuating back to it. However, I've tried multiple times to come up with a story, and every time there's something wrong. This story would allow for easier creation of subplots, but it wouldn't test the things I've been working with in the Valkyrie sequel.
Additionally, my interest for either of these stories isn't really there. I'd say it's mediocre at best. My interest in fan fiction in general seems to be waning.

To cap it all off, my novels took off recently in the worldbuilding department, so that has diverted my interest for the time being.

So what does all this mean?

Currently, I am not working on a story. I have two general story ideas, but I could get a random idea for something else and go after that instead. Interest could also stay low much longer than I anticipate/want, meaning it would be awhile before I write anything at all.

I just can't get away from these dismal FFCs.

At any event, that is the update, such as it is. I intend to read the Mistborn series by Brandon Sanderson soon, so maybe that will spark my writing interest once more. Until then, keep writing, keep reading, and I'll see you at the next FFC.
