Chardris - Card Preview

Posted May 23rd, 2008 at 11:09 AM by truth

The card you see here is the corrected version of Chardris. The version you'll likely see in the first pack you pick up will be a version with a couple of text errors in it.

From the desk of Paul Barclay:

Errata for Chardris: The advanced side of Chardris's printed stat card has two text errors, one minor and one major. The minor error is a mis-spelling of his name in one place. The major error is that the word "minimum" appears on the card, where the word "maximum" should appear. This is obviously a mistake, as his ability doesn't work sensibly with the word minimum. These errors require us to release official errata for Chardris. Here's the official text of the card that should be used in all games:

FIRE STRIKE SPECIAL ATTACK
Range 6. Attack 2 + Special.
When Chardris attacks with Fire Strike Special Attack, add 1 to Chardris’s attack dice for every additional Elf Wizard you control within 3 clear sight spaces of Chardris, up to a maximum of +3 dice.

The Chardris stat card image previewed at Heroscapers.com, and any Chardris images hosted on Heroscape.com include this errata, and are correct. Additionally, for this hero, please feel free to use printouts of the officially corrected card image in play.

We know this is a problem that's unlikely to come up in future sets - it was a one-off editing mistake that happened last summer, and we've got some different processes at Wizards that are designed to prevent those kind of errors. Also, we've added an extra set of eyes to the end of the process (the playtester team) so that we minimize the chance of silly mistakes in the future. Finally, future reprints of Wave 8 should use the corrected card.

Thanks to Paul and Truth for another preview. I hope Paul is correct about having fewer mistakes like this in the future.

I for one am surprised that he's an ullar figure. I was kinda hoping he'd be a mad-toting darklord. O well, still cool, go elves!

Well now we know that he doesn't follow Utgar. His attack is not that much better than Arkmer really, and since Arkmer has his staff and engagement strike I'm not sure how much better his defense is either.

Comparing to the similar Jorhdawn:

Equivalent:
*Same stat line as Jorhdawn.

Favorable comparisons:
*10 points cheaper than Jorhdawn.
*Base attack of special is 2 (instead of 1)
*Slightly taller than Jorhdawn. (Improvement for climbing, but not for avoiding engagement)

Unfavorable comaprisons:
*One less range than Jorhdawn.
*No area effect for special attack.
*Stat card has two errors.

DECISION: DRAW.

The differences are slight; in general Jorhdawn is better at countering squads, while Chardris is better at countering heroes.

Sorry for the double post but like kenjib said this guy doesn't seem so much greater than Armer. I guess we will have to wait and see how long his six life and two defense will hold up.

I really like him, I was kind of wanting him to be a Darklord, but he would have been to powerful then!

Cool, so many elf options! I, too, am surprised he isn't Utgar. I guess he's just the Goth elf.

EDIT: Oh yeah, the fire on his hand is AWESOME.

As has been said, I'm a bit surprised he's not with Utgar, not just for the color scheme, but because Utgar ALWAYS has at least one hero in the Heroes set.

But... I'm HAPPY he's not with Utgar! More heroic characters. Yay!

I really like his sculpt, but his playability isn't too great. I doubt I'd use him much. Even in an all elf army. There's too may relying on elf wizards nearby.

One more good ranged attack for the elves is exactly what I was hoping for.

Awesome job WotC! Honor, glory, and acclaim to all the wave 8 play testers!
