Tonight's Game - Raiders of Ice Island

Tonight Chas and I are playing Raiders of Zombie Island, my Zombies Island variant, on a map of Chas' design he calls Ice Island. His email description follows.

I got up before breakfast and made the 20x20 hex board of snow and rock that is now Ice Island. Three black sand 3 hex volcanic beaches (one for each side) hold the ships (x2 7 hexers showing, and all three on the side). Three hills rise in the center. The middle one is 7 hexes high and made of x3 7 hexers with a lava hex in the center, the side ones made of 1 7 hexer. They are connected by two bridges with no side walls. The other major features are the six snow staircases leading to them (two hexes wide, three each per side) with a grade of only two hexes per level. Two 4 and one 3 hex glacier mountains break up the flat terrain on either player side, along with some one and two hex snow rises. The perimeter of the island is a one hex row border of ice. All ice and snow is normal. The board is friendly to two hex characters.

Glyphs: Proxies for the four new portable glyphs are the Marvel yellow glyphs (not quite tan, but close), sited atop the hills. Brandar's Chest (it must be a hairy one) will of course be your custom ARK. We'll roll for them randomly when someone lands on one. The four regular glyphs are +1 Attack, +1 Defense, +2 move, and Potion of Healing (portable also in this scenario); these are placed at ground level in each pass near a bridge, one on each extreme edge beside each outer hill.

Comments: There are so many choke points that a zombie can block, such as the 'staircases' and the hilltop bridges, that it should be a challenging game, especially since the Ark will start on a hilltop, and have to be carried down a staircase and out to a beach. The side 'neutral' beach is just as far away, as it is not near a staircase exit.

Snow zombies, anyone? They don't feel the cold, and they're turning blue already!

My army:

150 Warriors of Ashra x 3
120 Kaemon
100 Kozuke
80 Raelin (My bad, no Kyrie allowed!)
40 Theracus (My bad, not human or elven!)
10 Isamu
500

My new army:

160 Sonlen
120 Kaemon
110 Ninjas of the Northern Wind
100 WoA x 2
10 Isamu
500

I am considering replacing Kaemon with Syvarris and Kyntela, as Syvarris would benefit the most from the portable glyphs.

Peace

Definitely keep Kaemon. Syvaris will go down too easily if you are sending him out to grab glyphs. That 100 points will turn into another Zombie very, very quickly if you are getting him into the fray. Plus with Kyntella it is an extra card to worry about putting OMs on.

Wellest Met, My Friends:

Just by using Marvel glyphs to proxy the new D&D portable ones, we can see that both the metagame and the tournament scene are in for BIG CHANGES! Here are the two armies I used in our two games:

Chas Army #1
Sgt. Drake
Sir Gilbert
Finn
Airborne Elite
Knights of Westin
Otonoshi
Isamu

Chas Army #2
Master Woo
Isamu
Shaolin Monks x2
Tagawa Samurai Archers x2
Isumi Samurai

K. won the first game; the second was a tie, as he no longer had two squaddies left to carry the Ark. We played a third Ice Island game without the Zombies, also for 500 Points. He won this one.

Chas Team #3
Nilfheim
Granite Guardians
Raelin
Tarn Viking Warriors
Kelda

Next week MS 3 is due. Happy New Year indeed...
