Betrayal of Utgar Campaign - SUPER EPIC - Needs your help!!!

Posted January 6th, 2011 at 12:39 PM by killercactus
Buried over in the D&D Scenario's forum sits a thread of my dungeon crawl ideas that was born when D&D began to invade Heroscape. With me not being a huge custom creator, it didn't take off very far. However, there is one idea in there that I think can be immensly epic and super fun - Betrayal of Utgar.

Probably my favorite video games of all time are the Final Fantasy series - especially the SNES era games (IV, V, and VI are my favorite. VII and X were also very good games, and I've played most others). Once Heroscape started down the fantasy road for the long haul, I started to try and come up with a way to make a Heroscape campaign that played like Final Fantasy does. That's how Betrayal of Utgar was born.

BoU is set after the end of the War of the Valkyrie. Utgar mysteriously has a parley with Jandar and agrees to a truce. All of the sudden, he is no longer obsessed with taking over Valhalla and controlling the Wellsprings, and is content to remain in his fortress in the Kyrien Mountains. Peace spreads over the land until one night, Ullar's fortress is broken into. No one is killed, but the thief is able to leave undetected with 2 valuable relics - Ullar's Looking Glass (each Valkyrie has a Looking Glass with which they can communicate), and the Amulet to his Wellspring. Fearing that someone is trying to restart the War of the Valkyrie, Ullar sends Syvarris as an ambassador to Jandar, requesting that he send someone with Syvarris as an ambassador to the other Valkyrie to uphold the peace, and also to find the thief to prevent another breakout of war.

In trying to bring a true RPG element to the game, it introduces a few new concepts to Heroscape, the biggest of which is an introduction of an Overworld that a player travels. While the player's party travels on the Overworld to various Valkyrie fortresses and towns throughout Valhalla, and has random encounters with monsters (ala Final Fantasy). Defeating monsters earns you Gold, which you can use in the towns and fortresses to purchase Treasure Glyphs to aid your party. The DM guides the player through the story, which will lead them all across Valhalla, recruiting more heroes to their party, fighting battles, uncovering secrets, and adventuring through dungeons. There are sidequests, a colisseum where you can bet your items to win rare artifacts if you can win a one-on-one, gladiator-style battle, 1v1 traditional battles, dungeon crawls, secret areas and treasures, and maybe even an airship... Obviously, all those things would require lots of time designing scenarios and battlefields. That's where I hope the community can come in.

Unfortunately, real life continues to interfere with my progress on this epic project. I've gotten the story hashed out, and much of the DM manual written, and a couple maps and dungeons built. However, I've come to the realizatio that if I ever want to finish this, I need help. So, I'd like to try and turn BoU into a community project. Below is a list of all of the battlefields and dungeons that need to be constructed and tested in order for BoU to take form. If anyone is interested in working on this project and building one of these battlefields, they need just post here or in my thread linked above and let me know which one they'd like to work on. I'll PM them the story specific details which surround it, and they have creative license on the rest! Hopefully with your help, we can make this the most epic campaign Heroscape has ever seen!

Ticalla Cave Dungeon (located in a cave in the Ticalla Jungle)
Memory Dungeon (located on Haukeland in a cave)
Utgar's Fortress Dungeon (located at Utgar's fortress in the Kyrien Mountains. The Darkness dungeon leads here. This will be about the size of 2 normal dungeons).

Stechevan Ruins (located in southern Nostrauland at the mountain pass into Upper Bleakewoode)
Searing Pass (located on the entrance to the Volcarren Wasteland from Braunglayde)

Dragon Lair #6 (located ????)
Secret Lair #1 (located ????)
Secret Lair #2 (located ????)
Secret Lair #3 (located ????)

Random Encounter Battlefields (should be less than half the size of a regular, BoV-sized 1v1 battlefield. A very little area where armies will be small and able to engage on the first turn)

Grass Battlefield - All Your Pie is doing this one
Sand Battlefield
Swamp/Jungle Battlefield
Snow/Ice Battlefield

Sent you a PM, Atlaga.

Kaiser - I like the Snow encounter! As long as it doesn't use more than one TT (it looks like it doesn't), it's good.
