What Your Army Says About You

Posted September 15th, 2006 at 01:56 PM by Revdyer

Karl Jung, in his p sychology, developed a theory of human personality that was based on discerning the archetypes that so often appear in human mythology and are reflected in the way we think and act. Many of those archetypes also appear among the figures of HeroScape. In fact, it just may be that as the Rorschach tests using inkblots can uncover the inner workings of our minds, so too, examining the armies and figures we like to play with in HeroScape may also tell us something of who we are and how we think and feel...Consider, first those who love orcs and want armies that swarm with them. Does this not show a strong dark side to the personality, the dark shadows of the mind cast over the playing field? In fact, those who favor the Marro or other servants of Utgar seem, by their choice of armies, to shout to the world how truly disturbed they are inside.

Then there is Taelord. Those who choose to field this mighty figure are usually crass egomaniacs, disrupters of the calm world around them, bringers of destruction. Taelord is also favored by those who have so much money, that they don’t care how much something costs.

Players who love the Zettians and Deathwalkers are cold and heartless souls. The same diagnosis could well be given to all who field Soulborg armies. On the other hand, those who choose dragons for themselves are just the opposite. They are expansive and extremists with a strong fantasy life that my take them right out of reality as we know it. Some people choose the dragons because they are over-weight and want to appear slimmer in comparison to their armies.

Jotun, too, corresponds to a physical as well as a p sychological profile. Many times Jotun is drafted by short people who are trying to overcome their inferiority complexes.

Some players, we know, prefer armies made up of female figures. There are two primary types of people who do this: either those in favor of equality who are wanting to be politically correct; or those who are lonely and looking for a girl-friend. Sometimes these are the same people.

Some types are obvious to almost everyone. Anyone who chooses the Dzu-teh is simply among the knuckle-dragging abominable types. Samurai and Ninjas are for people who want to hide, who are inside of their shells (like mutant turtles), and who want to appear inscrutable, even when they are not quite sure what “inscrutable” means. And the Vikings and AE are usually used by those given to hero worship, which is true of all of the Jandar Kyries as well.

Animal lovers, of course, use Deathreavers, Deathstalkers, Mardden Hounds, and Theracus; the latter is sometimes confused with My Little Pony. Those people who are most likely to befriend a lost puppy or buy a Charlie Brown Christmas tree will even draft Dund into an army.

Three significant personality types are tied to the use of elves, Sudema, and the cowboy figures. Those who are partial to the elves, from Syvarris on down, profess a love of the woodland ways. They will tell you that they are true nature lovers, and while some are nudists, most simply have a pointy ear fetish. Those with an Oedipus complex, of course, love their mummies and often draft Sudema. Finally, people who choose an army full of cowboys tend to be the kind of people who shoot from the hip.

Viper players are slippery customers, and some would say they are snakes in the grass, while wolves chase women in traditional style.

Those who like ranged attacks fear intimacy. Those who prefer melee attacks have boundary issues in their lives. Anyone who chooses Krug, of course, has anger issues (as do the MacDirk warriors). If someone plays the Knights of Weston they tend to have armored personalities.

Men who often draft the 4th Massachusetts Line, The Minute Men, have been accused of having difficulty with premature ejaculations, but this is not true. They are premature, but they don’t have any difficulty with it at all.

People who play the various Romans and the Sacred Band and those who choose to draft the gladiators, are in danger of simply living in the past. Those who want the various agents in their armies like to keep a low profile.

In conclusion, there are many things about a person revealed by their HeroScape armies. Not just the choice of figures, but the configuration of the armies tells the world something about us. Themed armies are the preference of people who want consistency in their lives. Mixed armies are for the adventurous who want variety and the unexpected. Balanced armies work best for balanced people And Taelord, Dund, and Khosumet are there for those who are self-defeating and are going to lose almost every game they play.

So, choose well, oh Heroscaper, for what you put on those starting hexes may tell the world a great deal about you. But the fact that you have chosen to play HeroScape at all says that you like to have fun and the fact that you are here reading this says you have a sense of humor and enjoy the company of a great community of people called Heroscapers.com.

That has to be one of the most interesting reads I've had here at heroscapers.com. I am curious to see what foresight you have for Isamu. How do you define a 10-point ninja?

Ha, I remember reading this a WHILE ago... back around when I first joined the site. The 4th Massachusetts Line bit had me cracking up then and still does now.

I love this blast from the past! Totally forgot about this old article. Great blend of (pseudo)psychology and humour. A classic piece--thanks for resurrecting it!

(Now you can reinvent it a bit too with so many new armies--where do the spiders/SuJoah players fit in? Are we just "buggy" or do we have a (twisted) love of nature? ...)

Love all your work, Rev.
