On Dungeons and Dragons 'Scape

I can remember, when I was four years old, at my grandparents’ home in Wisconsin, sitting on the cold floor, putting together puzzles. One was a Hopalong Cassidy one and another the Cisco kid. That might give you a clue to the ancient era of this memory. My mother, later, told the story that when there, I was sleep-walking, my hands moved as if putting the puzzle pieces in place in my sleep. I was hooked on puzzles.

Six years later, at age ten, I was introduced to a brand-new game, Tactics II (Avalon Hill) which changed my view of what games could be. (Up until then, they were just luck and I wasn't very lucky. Suddenly I saw that games could depend on being smart.)

I love games. All sorts, even athletic ones, although my knees, which got kicked in by a six-foot four Swede exchange student in college, did reduce my on-field life.

So, when I discovered HeroScape, especially in conjunction with my reduced mobile life due to two bouts of cancer (colon and lymphoma) and four years of chemotherapy, I was delighted. You all have heard that part before. Here was a war-game that was fun, lively, easy to play, and depended on being smart and a bit lucky.

Now, today, comes “Battle for the Underdark.” Here my love of puzzles, which had lived on in crosswords and computer ADnD programs, met my love of war games (including such complex and paint-intensive games as Johnny Reb II with 3000 hand-painted historical figures).

I read here, some negative feelinga toward the DnD Master Set and expansions. To that, I have to say, in my strongest Presbyterian way: “Piffle!” I love what is happening, growing, evolving in "our" game.

We are on the edge of a great new synergy. We’ve got puzzle meets war-game; and we should rejoice.

I love the life this game has given me.

This is new life and even better.

Long-live HeroScape! (OK, that was "over the top.") Viva la Scape!

I concur Heroscape is a great game evolving into a greater game.

I love the new figures and it even makes sense to me for WotC to reuse molds to save on production costs. This gets us more 'scape quicker. We've seen more new units in the last 6 months than we saw in the last 18 previous months.

It can only get better.

Sorry to hear about the knees. My grandfather was a professional English footballer (soccer) who was kicked on the field and had to wear a built up shoe for the rest of his life! This didn't stop him for leading a full life, including participating in the "Import/Export" Business for His Majesty in the Middle East, among other things.

I'll be 58 this Christmas Eve. I'm currently deciding which 500 points of D&D Scape to draft right into the ongoing tournament series run by Griznakh out on Long Island as a Mid Season Replacement. Hooray for Heroes!

Scape is the best game I have found and I am so glad that so much attention is being payed to it rather than letting it sit and stagnate. Thanks for the great effort expanding the heroscape world and thanks to the folks who maintain this site.
