PoohScape

“I’m scared Pooh.”

“Don’t be frightened Piglet.” Answered Pooh, who was carrying a picnic basket, “Although we are in a Changed Sort of Place, I think everything is going to be Fine.”

“But Pooh,” Piglet continued, still Very Worried, “you only have four move and I have seven move.”

“Yes.” Pooh said, tapping his head in order to encourage a Thought. “I’ve been thinking very much about that. I think because you are a Very Small Animal and I am a very .... not Small Animal, you can run faster, in order to Escape and Hide.”

“What is disengage Pooh? I also have disengage.”

Pooh tapped his head several more times. “I’m sure it’s somewhere in my head, Piglet. I’m just trying to make it come loose.”

They were making their way slowing towards the bridge over the river at the edge of the Hundred Acre Wood....

Seven Unexpected Wounds

Posted April 11th, 2013 at 10:02 AM by Sylvano the Wasabus
I wonder sometimes if we play Scape too much. Is that even possible? On Sunday we played three games and oddly enough I won each one. I should have gone out and bought a lottery ticket, because that definitely doesn’t happen every day for me.

The more I began to think about the ... oddness.... of the day the more strange occurrences I came up with. Now I know life is filled with odd fellows and odd balls and UFOs, but surely there is a limit.

Here is my list of seven unexpected wounds, unlimited, from last Sunday:

1) Snatter kills Taq Torgus.

The snatters are small magical constructs that are summoned by First City mages. They have an attack of 1. They’re a bit like Reavers actually. In this case there was a pack of Taq Torgus heading into the fight. The lizard men on dinos are feared in melee, so I was trying to...

Engagement Strike 13 in Real Life

Posted April 3rd, 2013 at 11:17 AM by Sylvano the Wasabus
I know several friends and good people who seem to be just sort of hanging right now. Not hanging by their necks or feet but rather just sort of waiting around for life to come and scoop them up. But life doesn’t scoop you up. It passes you by.

One fellow was in a different country where there were many civilian protests, some of which were violent, and he declared himself to be on the fence- he was against what the government was doing but the anger of the protestors was too much for him too. What could he do? So he decided to do nothing.

Yes, I think, doing nothing is doing something. It’s making a choice- a choice to not engage. A choice to turn the other way and ignore something- and isn’t that the same as being indifferent or against it? It has the same result. My friend was against what the government was doing and yet by choosing nothing, was he not condoning it?

He did not have to join in the protests. A person with imagination...

Dagger and Ian

Posted March 25th, 2013 at 12:46 PM by Sylvano the Wasabus
My Medieval March Break camp was recently held. I had the largest group of pages ever, but we were able to work it just fine with our assembled group of two knights and two squires. Most of it is old helmet and ran smoothly- but this time we did have two problem pages.

I knew going in that there was a person there who had a “worker” to assist and monitor them and administer their meds. I’m okay with that- the “worker” steps in where necessary.

I thought I picked the kid out right away. He sat apart from the rest of us and had a bit of darkness under the eyes that made him look disturbed. When we started work with coloured pencils he came to me and said he would have to leave the room, for the sound of coloured pencils colouring was something he could not survive. It was fine. I put him in an alcove with some crayons. He said his name was Ian, which I suspected was his real name.

Most kids pick new names. Leaving the past behind is...

Scouts!

Posted March 19th, 2013 at 10:54 PM by Sylvano the Wasabus
Sometimes map building is pure joy but I do believe it takes a mood. My younger son and I sat down the other day and three hours later finished a map that I’d often dreamt of.

The map had a river through the center, fairly wide, but it had cliffs on either side. A great gorge - full of water at the bottom and faced with high bluffs.

the three bridges over the gorge

There was a fairly gentle build on either side up to the cliffs- we actually ran out of swamp land terrain hexes building it. Then we put three bridges over the canyon to make things interesting. We also included rough trails around the heights on both sides too, so there were five ways of getting past/over the gorge.

My eldest son tried to be nice. It’s a beautiful map, he said, one of the nicest you’ve ever made, but I don’t think it will work well for a game. It...
