The Boy and the Brewer.

Posted June 27th, 2011 at 02:34 PM by Chardar
This is a short fable that I wrote for my 4-H creative writing project. I thought I would post it here as well.

The Boy and the Brewer.

Once upon a time there was a young boy who lived in a faraway village. One day he decided that he wanted to make some money. His parents refused to simply give the boy money, and told him that it was time for him to find a job. Now in such a small village it is hard for a young boy to find employment, so he decided he would find something to sell.
First he talked to the town blacksmith. The blacksmith said that he would pay the boy for metal ores. However the boy knew nothing about mining, so he politely declined the blacksmith’s offer.
Next he tried the town baker. The baker said that he would pay the boy for wheat to make flour. The boy knew he could sow wheat in his father’s field, and he thought about the baker’s offer for a long time. However it would take far too long to grow a wheat field, and he politely declined the baker’s offer.
The boy wandered the town looking for something he could sell. He talked to the jeweler, but there was nothing he could sell her. He talked to the preacher, but what could he sell a man of God? He talked to the farmer, with his land and family, already had everything that he could want.
The last person he could ask was the town brewer. The brewer told the boy that he would pay him for baskets of grapes to make wine. There was a large vine in the forest outside of the town, where he could pick them. The boy thought this sounded simple enough, and he eagerly accepted the brewer’s offer. He would have started immediately, but it was getting late and he had to be home in time for supper.
The next day the boy woke up as soon as the sun was up. With his baskets he ran off into the forest. He wandered lost for about an hour, but soon enough he came to the vine with the grapes. He spent the entire day picking the grapes. By the end of the day he was ready to collapse from exhaustion, but he had picked every grape on the vine. He had filled five baskets.
That evening he returned to the village and immediately went to the brewer. He showed the brewer the grapes. The brewer offered him three coins for each basket of grapes, plus a coin for the entire task. The boy knew that because he had picked all of the grapes on the vine that the brewer had to buy the grapes from him, and asked for four coins for each basket and two coins for the task of collecting them. The brewer’s apprentice suggested the price of four coins for each basket and three coins for the task, but neither the boy nor the brewer would give in.
The boy went home and hid the grapes. He knew that the brewer needed to make his wine, so he waited for the brewer to change his mind. The brewer knew that the boy needed his money, so he waited for the boy to change his mind. The apprentice spoke with both of them, but neither was willing to give in.
A week went by, and the brewer could wait no longer. He left to find the boy. The boy also could wait no longer, so he left to find the brewer. The two met in the center of the village, and quickly agreed on the apprentice’s offer.
The two left to fetch the grapes. When they arrived they were stunned by what they found. An animal had carried off most of the grapes, and those that were left were a fetid, rotting mess.
So, after all that they had been through, the boy had no money, and the brewer had no wine.
Moral: In a battle of stubbornness there can be no winner.

It sounds like the brewer had a good apprentice though...
