An Interesting Turn of Events

So, it's been snowing like crazy here in the Maryland region, the kids have been off from school for what seems like forever, I had to cancel church services this past Sunday, and my War of the Ring Collector's Edition will not be arriving until some time in May.

This afternoon I was at Walmart buying supplies for our church's Valentine's Dinner. My two sons were with me, so I let them take a stroll through the toy section. And there it was: Master Set 3.

I think it is well documented that I've not been a huge fan, and that I had pretty much resolved that my Heroscape buying days were over. I had seen MS3 on the self before and easily passed it by.

But today something snapped. I picked it up. I showed it to my boys. I looked it over again. Suddenly, somehow, it was in the cart! I watched, having a sort of out of body experience as the cashier swiped the box over the scanner and put it in a bag. Hmmm...what just happened?!

So I get home, open the box, and...

It was almost like deja vu from when I bought the Marvel Set. Sure it looked interesting, it was 'Scape, but I just wasn't drawn into it like RotV or SotM. Since that time, Marvel sits in a separate big baggie along with the rest of my 'Scape, but I couldn't tell you the last time it saw the light of day.

So here I am looking at the figures, still neatly standing within their clear plastic cells. And all my initial misgivings are still here. On their own they look good, but as I compare them to other Heroscape figures I still have issues with them.

Everything is still in its original packaging. I may be about to do something I've never done before; return Heroscape product.

I intentionally put this here because I didn't want to create more turmoil in the whole pro vs con D&D debate. I'm just sharing a story. I'm not yet sure how it will end, but I'll keep you posted.

You know what's interesting? MS3 has reinvigorated my son's interest in 'Scape. He loves having a storyline - an adventure to pursue. I love how it refocuses the lens on the game's heroes.

The one thing that sold me on Marvel was the use of short scenarios. But in the long run, I never really got into them.

The scenarios in MS3, along with the more realistic use of glyphs seems to be the main selling point as well. But based on my track record, I just don't know if I'll use them. I tend to like big battles with lots of common squads.

I'll hang onto it for a while as I continue to deliberate. My sons didn't seem that excited about it, so I don't have that as incentive at the moment.

No jbbnbsmith, say it ain't so. Take it back, don't give your money to WOTC. If you keep it, and never use it, thats just a waste.

Now on the flip side, if you like it, and will play with it, then keep it.

I say keep it! It's more terrain and different terrain at that. Ignore the scenarios, custom the figures and pour it all into your normal way of playing. In my book more terrain = good.

Today's breaking news about Wave 11, of D1, or whatever it's called isn't helping much. On the one hand, these are some great figures with great new paint jobs that blend in well with the existing Heroscape color scheme, and some cool new abilities to boot.

On the other hand, I really was planning to be done with Heroscape purchases. I need to stop visiting this site. Ignorance is truly bliss.

I blame it all on the snow. It's messing with my head.

Haha. I kept telling you guys that the waves were awesome. This is a really fun set I think, which has something for everyone. (Except the Vydar/Sci-fi guys).

Still haven't opened it up yet, but I also haven't returned it. The Wave 11 stuff is beginning to peak my interest. I like that they recast the various elementals rather than simply doing a repaint. They look very good.

Over a year later and MS3 remains unused. But then again, I've only played Heroscape once in that same time frame (local tournament). I've looked at buying some other D&D waves but haven't been able to pull the trigger. Maybe one day...

I decided to log-on just to take a look around and remembered the blogs. I just read through this one. The end of the story (for the D&D set) was I sold it on ebay several years ago for some ridiculous amount of money. So, in the end, I was very glad I bought it and didn't return it!
