TGRF's Fan Fiction Chronicles - Entry #31

It is curious how you can seem to be getting nowhere, and yet at the same time actually be unconsciously figuring out exactly what you think you can't solve.

Take BaoP. For a long time, I was banging my head against it, trying to find a theme to base the first installment on. 'I have to find a theme!' I kept telling myself. 'A theme! I need a theme! Everything starts with the theme!' Indeed, I've been telling myself (and anyone who would listen) this ever since I started writing.

As it turns out, I was wrong. Not completely wrong - you DO need a theme to lend your writing impression-leaving weight. But you do not, as I almost religiously believed, need to start with it. And as I suggested above, I discovered this quite by accident.

I had been trying to work with a vampire-centered tale for an iteration or two, but I had been failing to find a good theme. I would think I had one, but...

The Swamp Outpost

Well met!

The idea for this scenario stemmed from the center-modified Swamp Thing I built for Islandscape XIII, and the tournament's Cluster Draft format. I hope I will be forgiven for what I am doing to Browncoat's creation . . .

Teams of intrepid explorers

The Swamp Outpost

The Map. Swamp Thing, mutilated to create a Fort in the center. There are 4 Treasure Glyphs within the Fort.

[Took a few minutes to throw together a sample Map. Any similarity to Swamp Thing is purely coincidental.]

Summertime Custom Competition - Chops Appetizer

Posted July 21st, 2019 at 02:41 AM by truth
Summertime Custom Competition!

From a totally different mind than that which gave you a hit reality cooking show comes a custom competition named differently enough to avoid copyright infringement: Chops. Chops will consist of 3 rounds, the Appetizer, the Entree, and the Dessert round, each of which has unique requirements for your entry. Not only will prizes be given out for each individual contest, at the end of all three rounds a QC3 Chops Champion will be named and sent the grand prize.* Bon appetit!

Head to the Chops Kitchen to see just how spicy a meatball you've gotta make, and get it done by August 4th so you're not left in the rain to eat your soup with a fork.

*The grand prize is the same as the standard prizes.
**There are no standard prizes.

FFC #30 - Taking a break

TGRF's Fan Fiction Chronicles - Entry #30

Now that I have gotten more or less moved in and my computer is set up, I've been able to get back into my writing, test the waters, and find out where we stand.

The final fan fiction series is coming. This is a given. It is having difficulties getting off the ground though. There are a few factors contributing to this:
  • I want the installments to show - even if they don't focus on - the war. I've created a history of how the war began, where it stands, and how it will proceed once the series begins. I want to show that. I'm having trouble finding stories which are connected enough to the war.
  • Nothing feels particularly strong. I still don't have any sense of what the next story should be. It is still incredibly easy for me to pause and look at the development, and feel like it's going nowhere or that it is destined to not work out.
  • I keep running into complex problems on unimportant details. Few things
