Scaper of the Week 35 - Annerios

Our latest Scaper of the Week is a Master of Makeover, the Prince of Paint, and the King of Customs. He is none other than Annerios, the Master Custom Creator, as his title suggests. Annerios is also a member of the Codex staff and his contributions to this site can be seen in each issue. Read on to discover more about the man who's favorite unique hero is also one of my own. I present to you, Annerios. Enjoy!

Our 35th Scaper of the Week:

Annerios

Who are you?
The Warrior of the Wasteland! The Ayatollah of Rock and Rolla! Umm, sorry...Steve will do.

(A picture of me)

Who, or what, is your avatar and how did you come up with your username?
My avatar has changed many times. The latest one is of the Mortal Kombat character Scorpion in Heroscape form. My username is from a Middle-earth role playing game character from over 20 years ago. The true origin is lost in the mists of time...

Age:
39, but sadly not for long.

Occupation?
Technical support consultant, technical writer, and sales rep. You know those clunky old time card punch clocks people use at work? The company I work for pioneered "smart" versions tied to PC's back in the 1970's.

Allegiance and why?
Vydar. He is the underdog in terms of numbers, but has some great army choices.

When did you get into HeroScape and why?
I have always had interest in miniatures and games and keep up with the latest news. I heard about the game back in 2004 prior to its release. I already knew the terrain was going to be useful for almost any miniature game. I started snooping around, got my hands on the rulebook and then found that on top of the miniatures and terrain there was a solid game to be played as well. That made it something to play and not just scavenge for the parts! Plus, my family enjoyed playing the game, so it became a favorite.

Favorite aspect of HeroScape and why?
I think for me it is a tie between the miniatures and terrain. The game has a visual appeal that grabs you because of those components. While other games rely on flat maps or counters for units, this game provides an alternative that does not just tell players to, "go make your own suitable terrain or use any miniatures you may have".
(A sample of customs)

Favorite Hero and why?
Probably Me-Burq-Sa. You don't have to spend many points on him and he can do a lot of damage. On top of that, he rides a rotting Marro horse: weird and cool!

Favorite Unique Squad and why?
Krav Maga Agents: simple, reliable and deadly.

Favorite Common Squad and why?
4th Massachusetts Line. Line the enemy up and mow them down!

Favorite Special ability and why?
Engagement Strike. It keeps enemies at bay without the need to do much.

Do the customs come easy to you?
Not always. Sometimes the initial concept does not work well in execution and you have to go back to the drawing board. It just depends on what I am trying to accomplish. I need to be inspired to work on a custom. If I lose interest, it will languish and perhaps become part of some other project.

(A game in progress with custom units)

Do you start with a picture of the finished piece in your mind, or do you simply create the piece as you go along?
I usually have the concept in mind and a good idea of how to create it, but often you will discover a way to make the custom better while you are working on it. It is good practice to try out different poses or body part combinations before gluing a figure together, for example.

Favorite custom and why?
I think Scorpion was one of the most fun to work on. He came out much better than expected; despite my wife saying, "Hey look, it’s Ghost Rider!” when I finished it.

(Scorpion vs Sgt. Drake)

Least favorite custom and why?
I think I could redo the Crow figure a lot better. That was my first experiment in using a Heroscape figure's body for a custom. I would use a different figure as the basis for the design today.

Anything you'd change about the game - a unit, rule, or mechanic?
There are a few things here and there, but for the most part I think the game works just fine as it is. My biggest complaint was about how flying is handled and that is fixed with the optional flying rules.

What do you enjoy most about Heroscapers.com?
The mad creativity around this place and the previous incarnations of this site. There are such a variety of people here with various interests and expertise that illuminate different aspects of Heroscape that you may not even consider.

I must also say that one of the most enjoyable aspects of the online community for me has been working on customs with various talented custom unit creators throughout the years. Those collaborative efforts can be time consuming, but result in units that you are happy to draft into your armies.

Favorite HeroScape moment:
Having a chance to play at the Oct 2006 DFW Tournament. I got to meet many 'Scapers there and it was a lot of fun.

Nifheim or Zelrig?
Neither! I never use the dragons for some reason. I do like killing them, though.

Another board game you enjoy and why?
I enjoy trying out board games and miniature games, but don't have as much time to do so as I would like.

At the moment, the game that has my attention is Aberrant Games' Warlands. It is a Mad Max style skirmish game that has inspired me to get back into modding vehicles, terrain and painting metal figures. I did not think I would be going back to that after working on Heroscape figures for so long, but I can't resist the theme. I just wish the game had components like Heroscape, so I could concentrate on playing more than painting. Wouldn’t all games be better if they were a bit more like Heroscape?

Three true things and one lie about yourself:

I am bilingual.

I never did well on creative projects in school.

I own a collection of movie props from the film Aliens.

I have a degree in English literature.

Other interests?
Films, books, comics, video games, etc.

Any Heroscapers member you'd really like to play against?
Hex_Enduction_Hour, Noodles, Doc_Savage or hextr1p are on the top of the list.

What message do you have for the community?
Keep playing and creating. There are still so many units and terrain variants that could be made for this game.

Who do you pick for the next 'Scaper of the Week?
The pulp era extraordinaire, Doc_Savage.

Nice interview answers, Annerios! Glad to see you up as SotW. Well deserved, truly, as you're one of those who has not only been there from the beginning, but has produced wonderful work in both the HS mod and customs scene since I first saw your name back on .NET. Was also fun getting to work with you on the HS Compendium, and I still appreciate the work you did in compiling all that info!

Well met!

Congratulations! Now that I have been playing awhile, and have some idea of what I'm doing, I'll have to bring out Elric again, and give you a real battle report!
