Thoughts on D2

Okay, so I finally got a hold of the D2 that I ordered, and here are my thoughts on the look, feel, and (gasp) the bases of the units. (Not quite all of them, mind you, just the notables, good and bad.)

Heirloom - Looks sweet. I can't wait to try him with the Warforged. I've been overlooking him in the theoryscaping, but I will be interested to see if his special attack is sufficient, leaving me with just a heavy hitter to pair with the WS.

Kurrok - Only complaint here is wishing he were Ullar instead Utgar.

Rhogar Dragonspine - By far my favorite sculpt and overall feel. I love his stats, abilities and overall theme. HOW COOL WOULD IT BE IF HE BONDED WITH THE GREENSCALES!!?

Shurrak - Solid sculpt once I got over the weird charcoal face. He has that heavy feeling that he should have. "Knockback" is kind of a kiddy name. Makes me think of when I was little and made up names for my own special powers as my brother and I had epic Super hero/villain battles. "Sweep kick, you have to fall over!" "Oh yeah, BACK FLIP dodge, Knockback!" (as I hold forth my wrapping paper tube "staff.")

Blue Wyrmling - A future blue Aquilla Dragon that breathes lightning please, please, pleeeeeeease?

Red Wyrmling - The coolest and closest to his daddy. I really like the look and feel of this one.

White Wyrmling - Okay, a formerly purple mini dragon, literally dunked in white paint... poor Nilfheim.

Goblin Cutters - There's just one that looks really out of place. He's got completely different skin color and just doesn't resemble the others. Otherwise, the powers are really cool, I love the modded scatter, and the mob power. I think this squad is gonna be a lot of fun.

Ogre Warhulk - Man, this guys looks sweet. His whole personality, sculpt, and theme was just nailed. My only problem is, I'm seeing it hard to fit him into a build instead of Krug...

Mind Flayer Mastermind - Freaking awesome powers and theme... for 100 pts! I HATE the sculpt. The paint job is fine, but what the crap is he? I previously had very limited DnD exposure, so he just looks ridiculous to me... like he's from that Flatula race off of Disney's Treasure Planet.

Warforged Soldiers - Love everything about them. There's just one that doesn't have as much detail as the other two, but it doesn't matter at all. They are gonna be tons of fun to play.

Werewolf Lord - WHAT IS WRONG WITH HIS NECK????? That was the first thought that went through my mind when I looked at him. It looks like he just got done morphing into a werewolf and hasn't settled into his new skin yet... Otherwise, his powers, theme, and glow in the dark markers, are all really cool.

The Bases - Initially, I totally forgot about them, until I noticed how great the Goblins looked with mini-bases. I don't mind them at all. In fact, I wish ALL of the bases up to this point would have been this size. It gives more room for moving figures and adds to playability. Or, it would have been cool to have varying base sizes as an added feature into different units. HOWEVER, I do wish the edges were beveled.

THE BIGGEST LETDOWN OF THIS WAVE:

The packaging no longer allows for this method of opening an expansion, as I was late to the party on this one.

Great job designers. I can't imagine how things would have looked/turned out if you had COMPLETE creative control. Probably for the best, I don't need my brain exploding.

The White Wyrmling was all ways White, and just as bad looking.

Oh well, I love this wave anyway.

What about Mikka Connour--in my opinion, the best character in D2?

She's cool, and will certainly have her uses, but I was mostly commenting on the look and feel of the characters, as I haven't played any of them yet. I didn't really have any strong opinions one way or another with her.

(I am excited about setting up a shadow tile on height for Raelin to perch.)

What are your thoughts on the black Wrymling?

In my opinion, this is the worst sculpt in this wave.

Yeah, it appears in an awkward position, and I can't figure out if that's supposed to be a rock or a mutated hoof. I was trying not to be too negative and nitpicky, since I think the designers did the best they could trying to make the black wrymling, Othkurik, and Braxas, all from the same-ish family. (Each having different acid abilities, the Black Wrymling mimicking Othkurik in look, but Braxas in special ability etc.).

AND, I still think the White one is worse. It just doesn't resemble Nilfheim at all (except in wing shape), so I stuck with the low instead of mid-low.

He's a brain-eating monster from the End of Time man! They did choose a godawful sculpt, but Illithids are freakin' sweet.

I did a light repaint on my Mind Flayer, and he looks a little bit better.

I'm sorry I really didn't think it was that disturbing. Though my . . . baseline for that sort of thing is a bit out of whack, and I tend to forget that. I've removed the link.

I don't know if this has been revised in 4E, but in 3.5 Mindflayers and their elder brains (gigantic brains in even bigger tubs of water) managed to gain control of the entire universe and held it, up until the heat death of the universe. The Elder brains did *something* that focused the magical and psionic energy of the vast majority or their race (destroying most of them in the process) to send themselves back in time so that they can reclaim the universe.

They're highly intelligent, and have a multitude of psionic powers. The other races of Oearth consider them arroagant (at least the one's that consider them to have any sort of degree of "humanity"), but they just know that in the end, they will win.

They're brain-eating parasites that eventually control the entire universe.

That's funny. Hey, I was just kidding about scaring me, I really did have one of those looks like, "omg what the crap is that dude doing" on my face, but it wasn't anything that you had to take down, or actually offended/scared me for real. I was just being ridiculous.

Thanks for the future-sci-fi-fantasy-history lesson. If all that is true, I'd hate to see how powerful a "Unique" Mindflayer would be! (Surely only our Marvel Superheroes could save us, them and Batman).

The C3G guys knew about this long ago and have been preparing units to defend from the inevitable takeover. I knew there was another reason for their dedication!
